I don't feel like there is a market for Gaga anymore.

In the context of OP, it's true- she doesn't really have that sort of "distinguishable" market for her, and honestly never really had. I mean, it's arguable she had the "gay" market, but to be fair it's a lot more complex then that.

Even when she was at most popular, she didn't really fit in to any sort of marketable category. Hell, it could even be said that at that time her marketable category was because she was the "weird pop girl with blood". It was cool.

But now that the coolness wore off, what was she? In my opinion, it's a really dichotomous thing- she fit into no one distinguishable, marketable category, thus opening her up to more people, for people to enjoy her outside of a set demographic.

Yeah, yeah, even the gays on here argued she was being "too gay", or that she needed the straights back. So what? She was honest with herself and to the world and as an artist, and people liked her back for that.

And if people didn't like her back for that? I don't think she'd care- she stuck to her art, and that's very commendable. But, as Edgelover said:

And this is on the day that it's announced she's being awarded for her amazing songwriting abilites while attaining iconic nature in pop music...she has plenty of market for her. Believe me.

people are definitely appreciating it.

She'll be fine.  The public is beginning to appreciate that she is multi-talented and see that she is a good and genuine person.  Don't be surprised if she is bigger than ever in the future, as many more people are ready to like her.

I live outside the space time continuum.

2008, she gained mainstream popularity. Her market was everyone because people listened to and loved her music. She didn't complicate herself with the GP.....yet

2009, she emerged as a pop culture game changing figure. People peaked to listen to what she had to say a bit because of her level of new found super fame but not much. It was more so her in your face visuals.

2010, she changed pop culture by introducing intense theatrics, gave the whole pop scene a resurgence of energy and new motives for the new decade (given so many major forces began copying her). Doing this, she became a niche market, becoming too eccentric for most. But those who valued her vision, valued it intensely. And this became the beginning of her solidifying a loyal fan base

2011, she completely focused on strengthening a fan base, using her enormous platform to give people who felt gained up on a platform. These fans became more and more intense as her fame rose because they correlated her success with feeling represented. Having a figure who would do anything to represent the aspects of you once payed fifth be the #1 star in world is a liberating feeling. 2011 from a marketing stand point gave Gaga a long term fan base.

2012 - 2013  she was very confused with her direction. Her fan base was strong as ever but her revolutionary potential was decreasing. She was experimenting with new parts of herself to possibly re-emerge as something fresh again. She tried to excite people with technology and change pop culture, but was unsuccessful. The world wouldn't listen to her. People didn't have patience for large concepts. On top of that, the music was not digestible.

Late 2014 - Present, I feel Gaga is realizing the GP is a lot more forgiving than once thought. She has to pull people in with something direct. In 2008 she created herself by giving unconditionally catchy pop tunes and a fresh look. The truth is, her concepts were never really listened to anyone outside of her fan base. Gaga is to everyone outside of her fan base how she appears on an external level. ARTPOP required more than just listening. It took time to comprehend and study. 2015 Gaga hit a vein. While she has started the process since C2C, the Grammy's and Oscars gave her a stage to try again. The GP could finally digest her. There were no concepts, only her beauty and talent. The Oscar performance was probably the most important part of her career. It was direct unconditional talent showcased to a new group of people who probably never did any research on her. If enough of those people begin to praise her, everyone will hop on that train because praise is infectious.

In conclusion, Gaga pulled the perfect market to be her core fan base. She has made her fans the most dedicated, and even if some have jumped off the train, they will jump back on because 2011 gave her a now nostalgic place in their heart. Today, she doesn't seem like she has a market because she is focusing on pulling in THE WORLD. Not just teenage girls, not just gay males, but EVERYONE.
