thefamebitch 796
So basically, everyone should be restricted in what they do or wear based on their skin color? How ****ing ignorant. We're all one race and she thinks that the color of your skin should dictate whether or not what you're wearing/ doing should be based on the stereotype of what skin color or tone you have? MonsterOfSpain 8,278
She's overreacting... I didn't even know cornrows were created by black people, gypsies usually do it too... I think she could've chosen a lot of things to talk about within this topic other than hair styles.
Tove Lo 2,481
Anyways, culture isn't just color. Eminem grew up in Detroit, where "black culture" is significant. He grew up on their culture too and that culture is part of him and he isn't appropriating it. hop on that **** like a maniac
MahoganySnitch 67
Well, do these stars not do/say things that we would immediately attribute in real life to "Black"? I just hope those who embrace these things in pop culture do not use them as a negative in real life, not very colorblind of you In any case, I tend to line up with Toni Morrison's thinking: stuff like Jazz, with heavy Black musician involvement, can be done abroad by Japanese and such, but the origins should be recognized as well, to see where that kind of music came from. Recognize the movements and emotions that went into its genesis.
Tove Lo 2,481
Is Beyoncé appropriating white culture when she has blonde hair, then? No because black people created everything and whites just like to take ownership of it. hop on that **** like a maniac
MahoganySnitch 67
Is Beyoncé appropriating white culture when she has blonde hair, then? How do you define "White culture"? As in the broader western culture, with western wear, blonde hair? Because if so most in the west grow up with that as the standard.
Spanish Eyes 1,941
Good Lord, people. She actually has a point. If you think they're arguing against being influenced by other people's cultures, then you're being defensive. It's perfectly fine to appreciate minority cultures...but when you act in a way that disrespects their culture (dressing as a native American for Halloween) or continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes / social strucutres, or when you remain silent on issues sensitive to the culture you're appropriating, then it's bad.Cultural appropriation is a neutral concept. Neither good nor bad.Cultural misappropriation is the problem. The lifting of traits of a minority culture by the dominant one with no respect to its origins. Haroon 49,685
The mention of Katy eating watermelons is ridiculous Katy's liked watermelons ever since Hot N Cold, watermelons aren't exclusive to black culture
Phoenix 17,395
Everyone can have an opinion, it doesn't matter how old they are. It can change over times, but this doesn't mean she can't share her thoughts. By calling out celebrities and giving that thing a name she gave. Sharing your thoughts and attacking someone is not the same I'd say. She can talk about black culture, but she should wait a bitso she can actually learn some more about the past of black people. 💎
faux 2,190
This whole bashing of white people appropriating black culture is stupid as ****. Since when are people not allowed to do stuff just because they are a different race? y'all want peace and love in the world yet you want white people to do white people stuff and black people to do black people stuff what the **** is that even, culture is meant to be shared

Spanish Eyes 1,941
Intention is not as important as the final product. No one is saying these people are being racists. It's the final, overall image of the cornrows, ebonics, watermelon (and the Japanesy line). Katy and company are not individually racist but their cultural MISappropriation DOES perpeturate negative images and systemic oppression of minorities. Does that make sense? Spock 20,290
Her character and all of her District was stereotypically cast with African American actors in the movie because they are supposed to be dark skinned and are in charge of crops. It is never said that they are Black in the books, nor are there any descriptions of them being black; they are dark skinned because of the sun. The fact that they cast black actors because they are in charge of crops is much more insulting and speaks more about racism in the US than Katy eating watermelons with cornrows on her head. Why didn't she talk about that in her little movie who will love me when the night is over
