Mills 446
The only 'requirement' aside from longevity (if such prerequisite even exists) for one to be named with these imaginary royalty-based titles of a genre or of anything related to music or to entertainment in general is success within that field, either commercially (via charts and sales) or critically (via # of awards and other recognitions). And not necessarily based on which artists have the 'best' talent since it's impossible to come up with a measurement to that which would be accepted by almost everyone. As for the table you've made, a lot of them are easily arguable. For example, Miley Cyrus didn't "sell a lot of albums"? Throughout her career, she has sold albums worldwide as much as Rihanna and Gaga. All of the artists mentioned have also somehow re-invented their image and music at least one time (Compare: Rihanna's first two albums to GGGB and then to Rated R and later to Loud; Katy Perry's One of the Boys to Teenage Dream; Miley Cyrus' Breakout to Bangerz; Taylor Swift's debut to 1989). I've also seen them dance, heard them sing live, and witnessed them put a decently likeable show on stage, so I don't know why they shouldn't be able to do those things mentioned above when they've already done (and continue to do) those things. Perhaps you mean they haven't pulled those off 'greatly', but that's a different discussion which is entirely subjective. Being able to do something =/= being able to do something amazingly. One's based on verifiable facts, the other's based on personal preference.

Economy 49,563
2012s sales were 10 times worse than 2014's sales. And they aren't going to fall because the reason they started falling is the internet. It started getting popular so fast and as it was getting popular, people would get more music for free. Now that everyone knows and uses the internet, there is not a reason for the album sales to fall. And I think that album sales still be the most important thing. It's obviously not the only thing that counts and I never said it is. i think it has room to fall further... The economy was worse for starters and that affects purcahses in general (even something like albums, especially since u can get it for free and if your tight every dollar matters) Theres the type of music of the time also... Over the last few years its gotten a little more soulful, and seems like the GP is appreciating more soulful music again... that type of music typically sells more in albums that party songs like from Ke$ha or LMFAO... that may account for at least a portion of the short-term blip There was also some tightning in the US over illegal music downloading which no doubt helped give a small increase in legal purchases (here in Canada where we havent gotten legal action there was no such increase in album sales) Lastly, the population is growing, the economy is growing and therefore in total numbers the music industry still grows... on a relative basis albums by being "stable" arent growing among with other segments and as such as a share of the industries sales, its still falling even if total numbers suggest otherwise I dont think its going to fall A LOT more because there will always be music collectors and such... but i think it has room to fall a bit more, a few years are but a blip in long term trends... Its not because we have 2 or 3 years of colder temperatures that ud say global warming has stopped, the long term trend may not be over But as i said, even if it stabalizes right now without falling any further, it simply is less significant than it used to be. Its share of over-all sales and success has shrunk a lot and i think people still like to pay as much attention to is as they did back when album sales were a bigger thing making the emphasis on album sales disporportionate to real significance

Kayla 7,595
Do you think awards factors in as well? Like grammys, guinness records, etc? Cus I definitely agree with the list you gave. Maybe Grammys and such come once you have the qualities that you just mentionedI would assume those things come when an artist has the other things in my list. But I have an issue with awards. Like...Album #2 could have gotten a Grammy if it weren't for #1, right? But what if #2 was competing with albums from the previous year? Or the following year? This whole concept of "BEST" is annoying to me. If someone deserves a Grammy, they should get a Grammy. They shouldn't miss out just because someone else happened to make an album at the same time that happened to be "better."Like in a classroom- a 90-100% is an A. Everyone who meets that criteria should receive an A.If you want to award excellence, ****ing award excellence and don't make it a competition. This idea that "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE" just bugs me. Even "Queen of Pop" plays into this- like if you're not #1, **** you, right? I believe if you are excellent, you deserve to be rewarded for that. Someone else's excellence shouldn't diminish the importance of your own. Regarding critical acclaim, I like artists who know the rules and know how to break them. Background knowledge is essential. One of my career mentors has told me, "I'm being strict with you on the rules now- I want you to know them so you know when to break them," and I've taken that with me. Like Gaga- she understands the music she's making. She can write, edit, and interpret the sheet music. She's studied pop culture, fame, lyrics, etc. She knows her ****. She can follow the rules to a T or she can break them, and she does both exactly as she sees fit. People who know their **** recognize that ****, which is why critical acclaim AND public impact is important.
Ferrer Zorola 3,966
How isn't Miley ticked for reinventing herself when she had the biggest reinvention out of any of them? And to be honest the other three have all reinvented themselves too. And if you aren't gonna tick Katy for being able to sing then you shouldn't tick Taylor either. Plus put Beyonce in, she ticks all those boxes too, not just Gaga. Who even wastes their time making something like this? So lame. Taylor sings way better than Katy and Beyoncé sings RnB not pop LIFE IS GOOD
