Isn't there arguments being made that it's harder for black women to be taken seriously in the music industry? Like they are expected to act a certain way? I seem to recall several, several years ago reading some article about a pop/rock singer who was black saying that she resented the fact she was expected to look and sing a certain way and basically make R&B/Pop. Mills 446 Posted April 8, 2015 Share Posted April 8, 2015 With the same music and image, it would surely be more challenging for her to convince people to purchase her music and actually root for her in a global stage since discrimination against people of color still does exist even to this day. It would've been yet another layer for people to discriminate her, in addition to being female, being of Italian descent, and her vocal support for the LGBT community, a sector of society which still experiences widespread discrimination. So yeah, challenging to be as popular (or even more successful), but not necessarily impossible - considering most of the most successful artists post-rock era are of American-Africant descent, from the '70s, '80s all the way to the current decade. And there's the interesting fact that 5 out of the 7 female solo artists who have topped Billboard's Hot 100 chart the most since its inception are either partly or mostly labeled/associated as 'black'. Did their skin color stop them to become successful? No. Did it make their journey more challenging? Based on history, I'd like to believe yes. If anything, everything boils down to talent at the end of the day, doesn't it? If one is so good with what he/she does, then the more he/she will likely be appreciated, as opposed to the ones with less talent to share. Gaga is one hell of a talent.
