Fredric Sheldon Brandt grew up in the Weequahic section of Newark made famous by Philip Roth, among others, raised by parents who owned a candy store. He was an honors student, a science geek, a swimmer and, as he explained, “more of a different child.”

“I remember taking things apart as a kid, radios and other things,” Dr. Brandt said. “I was always questioning everything to see how it worked.”

When he was 15, his father died from complications of juvenile diabetes; seven years later, his mother also died, unexpectedly, as he was entering his first year of medical school. “It was a lot to process, but you just have to forge ahead,” he said.
