Your thoughts on the "Gaga is a gimmick" theory

I hate it when people think that Gaga is a character, a marketing ploy that was created by her label to make her seem interesting and stand out. I can't blame people for thinking this way. It would make a lot of sense if this was true, Before she was famous, her music style was very different and she dressed normally. Her label maybe didn't think she was conventionally attractive enough to be marketable by just looking natural. So they convinced her to wear wacky outfits and act weird as a distraction. So she changed her image and music and became a huge star. All this makes a lot of sense and it would be easy to believe it is true. Sometimes I even believe the baseline of this story is true. But then you could say that maybe Gaga was always like this but wasnt brave enough to be herself fully until she got confidence from being signed. Or you could say that people change as they get older.

I do think that she may have been encouraged to be marketable in the beginning but I do believe that she enjoys the image of Gaga that she or they created. She isn't faking anything. I also think that becoming gaga was a good escape for her after all the trauma she went through before becoming famous. Gaga is an extremely creative person and her outfits and performances are her way of releasing that creative energy. She would feel stifled if she acted normal. She also didn't have the opportunities to collaborate with other talented people or the money to access all the exotic clothes and create elaborate stage shows before she was famous. I think that is most of the reason why there is a change. If I had the confidence and the money to wear unique and interesting outfits, I would probably do it too. It honestly just seems really fun to experiment with different looks. I think that is how she views it. Why is that so hard to believe?

I guess it just really bothers me that a lot of people think that she is a puppet of the music industry and she is completely manufactured. That she has no creative input and basically just does as she is told and everything she does is for the purpose of selling. Its clear from her interviews that this is definitely not true.

Honestly even if Gaga and her label decided that this was the route they would go to make her stand out and become famous, I really wouldn't blame her for it. There are tons of talented singer/songwriters out there. Many who are way more "conventionally attractive" and therefore more marketable than she is. What sets her apart? I truly believe that Gaga was never in it for the money. Her label of course is because the music industry is after all a business. But, she just wants to spread her talents and message as far and wide as possible. To get the fame (and with the fame comes access to many people) maybe she did feel like she needed some type of gimmick.

I think people will always question if she is really being herself or not. But,the bottom line is, she feels happy and fulfilled when she makes other people feel entertained, confident, and happy. Does it really matter in the end what she did or does in order to do this? As long as she never negatively affected anyone, what is the problem?

i pay it no mind but when fans try to say it, or define her birth name from her stage name it irks me to hell bc it's literally just that A STAGE NAME, her family, friends & taylor all probably call her stefani fgs.

At the beginning she knew after being dropped from Def Jam she would have to look the way she did during TF era because it would make people interested, hence why NOW she dresses how she wants, doesn't worry about her weight, talks how she wants & makes the music & shows she wants to make. She wasn't a gimmick she was just extremely smart.

She WAS intentionally conventionally "beautiful" then, but i personally find her more attractive in the last 3 years than before tbh

She did certain things to cause controversy, that much is clear. But when it comes to her artistic integrity, I think that is genuinely who she is.

I think she has always been ''different'' but it doesn't mean that she has always been confident enough to show it. Also, maybe she didn't have the money to fully express herself through her clothes. It's such a naive way to think that she could afford designer clothes when she was just a 19-year-old girl in New York, just because she says she has always ''been like that''. I believe that she has been the same person for a long time. She just wasn't able to show it back then.

Obviously she has done things for publicity, she knew some things like the meat dress will get a lot of attention. However, I find it sad that because of being outrageous people immediately think she's untalented.

She's an entertainer, of course she has some form of gimmicks. When you sign up with a label, you're issued a marketing team where they come up with your gimmick and then you execute it. That doesn't mean she isn't authentic though.

It's science, bitch

Kind of sad how uneducated you are about Gaga. Gaga has been dressing like the fame (minus the blonde hair) since she was 20 before she got signed to def jam. Def Jam just didn't like her style but Interscope did. This also shows that you weren't a fan back then because many people called Gaga "ugly" and "tranny robot". She was never conventionally beautiful and still isn't now which isn't a bad thing.

I consider her "self-manufactured". And She changes all the time. She stuck with that particular version in her early career long enough for it to get stuck in people's minds and she's been trying to escape it ever since TFM.

Gaga has told her story countless times. From the very beginning record labels/industry people rejected her because she was a risk. She wore weird clothes (granted, not as weird as they are now) and talked about weird stuff. Laurieann Gibson and RedOne's account of meeting Gaga show the same type of reaction: who does this girl think she is... I'm not sure about her....

Gaga has definitely evolved over the years and with those who have poor memory, She was relatively "normal" at the beginning of The Fame Era. We all also fail to take into account that Gaga didn't just go from NYU to Interscope's office. She spent a good year or two burlesque dancing and doing "avant garde" shows with Lady Starlight," which is ultimately what led her to go onto this "Gaga" lifestyle. I don't believe she one day deduced that she wanted to be a controversial popstar, it kind of just happened. And it wasn't necessarily a sure fire way of selling albums in 2008. Hence Def Ham DROPPED her.

Anyway, does anybody have a link to the video of an Interscope person saying how since day one Gaga knew exactly what she wanted to do and how to do it? Nobody told her how to do anything.

I thought Gaga met Starlight after getting dropped from Def Jam
