Sounds very good on paper, but I think it isn't going to work. Lets be real about this: the one and only reason why spotify became so big is the fact that the majority of the massive population on this planet downloads music illegally. So how convenient it is to have a free app that allows you to listen to the same mainstream music without using storage space. Even if all of your faves in the planet move to Tidal to release things exclusively, someone will still rip it off, and it will be in thepiratebay in seconds. People who joined spotify will not move to Tidal and pay for exclusive material: they will wait for one hour and download the hi-fi torrent and continue with their lives.ย The way the industry was going before streaming service became a thing.

I believe Tidal can maybe become some hipster thing or status thing ("look, I listen to music through Tidal"). But other than that, the mass who doesn't want to spend money, will not spend it. This idea isn't the second coming as it is painted to be in those videos. Good marketing tho.

I'm very sceptical about how the artists will make more money off this. As far as I understand Spotify doesn't really make a lot of money anyway, so I'm waiting for the receipts on how this will "revolutionise" the playing field.ย

I'm just not understanding what is actually different. (Other then attributing a lot of famous faces).

Also, are these "owners" going to make money off other artists streamingย as well?ย

ย

I'd also like everybody to start spilling the tea on what an "expertly curated editorial" is in reality.ย :excuseme:

โ€‹I've been replying to people all day on here about why this is POSITIVE... Just fed up with it a bit.

โ€‹It IS a brave business and creative move, wether you agree on that or not. It is, period.ย

ย

That's your take on this new streaming service. It doesn't make it so.

Believe me, people here get that you think this is going to change the world. Some of us are skeptical and some simply do not agree.ย

โ€‹Yeah I do and play the piano. Though I don't think this is really the place for my work :D

Why? It is a music forum with hundreds of people. Others here share their musicย all the time.

Why wouldn't you want to share your work and your music?ย

I probably won't use this, but I think it's a good idea actually. Artists need to be able to make enough to tour, make videos, as well as pay for basic necessities. If Spotify and other sites continue we may have a very different future. One where labels don't want to pay for videos andย people in some parts of the world can't see their favorite artists on tour.ย

โ€‹How is it ridiculous, may I ask? Offering streaming service that is more fair for the artists for the same price or for super hd quality if you want to pay more. :)

โ€‹I think it's ridiculous because people are already used to getting everything for free. Tidal would have been a good idea 5 years ago, before Spotify and streaming in general exploded the way it did. Consumers won't pay for something like Tidal unless the added value is worth it - and it just doesn't cut it in my opinion. "Backstage access, exclusive updates, etc" is BS in my opinion.. nothing is "exclusive" in the digital era.. it might be exclusive for 5 minutes until someone rips it, uploads, and shares with friends. The other big selling point for them is "higher quality music" - I think the quality of music I hear on Spotify is excellent! I'm sure the sound and quality is better on Tidal, but if I could listen to for free and enjoy it just the same, why would I sign up for a monthly fee?ย

Interesting how we still don't know anything about the structural aspect of the service: how will this affect contracts with record labels and how much more money will the artists get exactly?

Right now it just looks like they're stakeholders and that's gonna be it.

โ€‹I feel the same... their plan isn't very transparent and because it's spoken of with such grandeur, it comes across as really dodgy.ย
