Each year some 45 million male chicks in Germany are shredded shortly after hatching because they don't lay eggs and aren't suitable for meat production. Pressure from animal rights groups led the government to fund research that allows the chick's s-x to be determined before it hatches. This means male eggs can be used for other products rather than destroyed. Agriculture minister Christian Schmidt said the method has almost been perfected and will start to be used in hatcheries from late 2016. It seems they'll be using the eggs, though, not the male chicks: "This means male eggs can be used for other products rather than destroyed."However, I'm pretty sure you can't tell the chick's s-x until they're a day old, so unless they've found a financially effective way to s-x them in the egg I don't know how that'd work.... Regardless, the fact that they're caring about the chicks is a step in the right direction. Puts us a little closer to having people care about the hens that laid the eggs, the chickens used for food, and the female chicks that will become egg-laying hens. Didymus 34,380 Posted March 30, 2015 Share Posted March 30, 2015 A silly and unsuccessful way to give the food industry an aura of "humanity", though it appears that it's working for a lot of you already.In fact, you could even say that being instantly (meaning painlessly) shredded to death is preferable over what the surviving animals have to suffer through. And even if we let that slip our minds, the idea of breeding animals to kill them off when we've had our way with them seems to be the real problem to me.Eggs are an unnatural food for humans anyway, we should just stop eating them and problem (well, one of many animal-related problems) solved.
