Why didn't Beyoncé's 4 receive the criticism that ARTPOP did?

I think it's because it was truly ahead of its time and people realized this looking back, that It's a really good album (I'm not saying that ARTPOP wasn't because I love it) with really good songs.

​This "overrated" thing is so old omg. She is a talented vocalist, a hard working performer, good dancer, kind and is very charismatic (and I'm looking at the person you used in your emoticon with most of these points). So just because she gets her deserved praise, doesn't make her overrated. 

 

On Topic: Maybe because 4 is an album which is very easily digestible. ARTPOP is godly, but you have to be willing to listen to it with an open minded.

​Are we going to forget 2010-2011 Gaga and how huge she was, though? She was a phenomenon during those years. She was riding off the massive success of TFM. BTW was a huge feat for her as well. Given how poorly mismanaged ARTPOP was and the lower (but not horrible compared to other's) opening week numbers, it gave a lot of other fanbases ammo to fire at her, even the stans who's fave has the worst sales. Gaga was huge and people were waiting for her to fall. ARTPOP was the perfect chance to do so, and it happened.. 

IASF Bey was also pretty big, with a lot of hits, but given the fact "4" had a weak lead single (in terms of chart success) and it leaked like a month in advance but still opened with 300K+ units was pretty good. Bey has a pretty good core fanbase, as well as casual fans who will buy her stuff. Gaga, too. She's a wonderful performer and a top vocalist. It's not a normal day on GGD if someone's not calling someone who deserves their success overrated. I'm not sure why fans of any musician try to take other people down with them when their fave isn't doing as good as they can (and should) be.

Anywho, I thought we were in 2015? Cheek To Cheek? A pretty successful jazz album. I thought we were going to leave the ARTPOP flop talk behind since Gaga's in a much better place? It seems as though Gaga doesn't even care anymore, so these threads are boring. ARTPOP is still fun to listen to, we just need to stop focusing on this flop talk when referring to music. I'm a fan of many "flop" albums, "4" and "ARTPOP" to name a few. lmao

People were talking about 4's lack of commercial success. However it wasn't as bad because the album also was, at that point, her most critically successful.

4 necessarily wasn't a flop however it definately DIDNT suprass Sasha Fierce..I think also maybe Gaga was set at a huger margin then Beyonce because BTW was very successful and critics expected her to be at that level and better for ARTPOP. I'm sure after all the positivity, her next album will be her rebound! Impact wise 4 beats ARTPOP because it had more memorable songs. Sales wise, ARTPOP beats 4. Also take into account that both albums leaked early. And Gaga had a huge rivalry with Katy and Bey didn't have any competition at the time.

Sorry to say but ARTPOP had 2 songs that the GP loved Applause and DWUW. However 4 had 5. End of Time (the iconic leg stomp), Run The World (Beginning of labeling her as a feminism), Dance for you (huge in the R&B genre), Party (huge in R&B and Hip-Hop), and I Was Here (empowered song. featured in graduations). I think it all comes down to people having different expectations from ARTPOP. Seeing how creative Gaga is, many people expected a more experimental concept album to account for the 'art' part in the name. A mayor misunderstanding that didn't seem to be set straight. And at the time the public didn't really seem to care for her as a person and take her seriously.

​It's got nothing to do with fanbases, that's just forum drama it doesn't exist in the real world.

It's really just cause Beyonce is seen as more credible than Gaga. She underperformed with an R&B throwback album whereas Gaga underperformed with a super accessible dance-pop album with 'art' in the title. Neither album is amazing or anything they're both decent but it's easy to see why critics thought better of 4. 

Honestly Gaga is really not hated by the media at all, she just set herself up as an easy punchline during that era. The media's done nothing but shower her with praise during the last six months.
