This doesn't sound like a good idea. No, they would not be able to bring people back to life. Woolly Mammoths are extinct. The goal is not to bring back dead Mammoths, but to revitalize the species as a whole. Humans aren't extinct (yet), so that isn't a concern right now. That money also could have been used on curing diseases, better food products, etc. Furthering scientific discovery leads to other beneficial things. For example, NASA's space exploration research lead to lots of very useful spin-off technology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spin-off_technologiesI personally feel that learning and discovering are not useless endeavors.
