If you're looking for the city with the largest sheer number of LGBT people, you should pack your bags for New York City! According to a new Gallup survey, 756,000 people in New York City identify as LGBT.

Looking for large amount of gays in a warmer climate? You can head across the country to Los Angeles, which boasts the second largest number of LGBT individuals at 590,000.

Interestingly, you may find that it seems like San Francisco and Portland have more gay people. That's because those cities have smaller total populations and the percentage of LGBT individuals in both cities is actually higher than in NYC or LA.

From The New York Times:

The San Francisco and Portland, Ore., metropolitan areas have the greatest percentage of residents who are gay, as we wrote last week. But those regions do not have the largest gay populations in terms of sheer size. That distinction instead goes to New York and Los Angeles.

Those two metro areas are so large — the only two in the country with more than 10 million residents — that they lead the way on many population counts, including the number of people who identify as gay, lesbian, bis-xual or transgender. About 756,000 people in the New York region fall into that category, according to an a--lysis of survey data by Gallup, and about 590,000 people in the Los Angeles region do.

Head over to NYT to check out their infographic and find out where other U.S. metropolitan cities fall on the list!

here's the list

The article says LGBT. Not just gay.

Say it with me:

GAY PEOPLE ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE LGBT COMMUNITY.

I guess you could get away with calling a lesbian gay but lesbian is obviously more preferes

Bi is NOT part gay. It's not part straight either. It's FULLY bis-xual. Bis-xuals aren't a scientific formula where they are half gag and half straight. So no, don't refer to them as part gay please.

Transgender is indeed valid.

So if the title replaced "gays" with LGBT members, that would be accurate and respectful. :)

LGBTQA is the correct one; Lesbian, Gay, Bis-xual, Transgender, Asesxual & a few hidden ones like pans-xual demis-xual etc

OT: i thought that NYC would have it bc of all the fashion publications, gay bars, drag shows, Fire Island and more tbh
