Atheist ad on CNN: "Not afraid of burning in hell"

TBH, I'm all for a secular government but to be a foundation of atheists denouncing religion in a shady way, I don't agree with that because they are being such hypocrites promoting their beliefs while denoucing others. Like, I'm Christian, non-denominational and I don't go to Church and I'm a homosensual, but I'm still a Christian :emma: and if there's one thing I hate more than a religiously baised government, it is snarky atheists promoting atheism and trying to convert believers or prove them wrong. Like, why can't some people just have religious beliefs? Why do you have to make it seem like religion is wrong when I just want to get my spirituality game on? It's like meeting a Jehovah's Witness and let me tell you, I know them all too well  default_awkney2.gif

CowSiss you are perfection in a post.

I'll just leave this for all of the spirtuality bashers and pray that they find light and meaning.

I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses, but we don't force people to listen or accept the Bible or the belief in God.

This is off topic but can you explain this to me?

So my grandma is a JW and my aunt converted to an evangelical and the people from her congregation officially kicked her out when they found out and NO ONE will talk to her so now she feels awful because she lost a lot of friends. Is this a common thing?

I disagree, and not even for the sake of respect or polite, but just like.. literally. http://gagadaily.com/uploads/default_air.jpg Religion is definitely an intrusion on what should be a secular, but open to religion market. In America, because it is a majorly held belief system, it is unabashedly used to get around the concept of Separation of Church and State - which had a real, profound purpose. Religion loves Religion, and it tries to do things like exempt itself from legislation or push it upon others subtly already. If so many people weren't Christian in America, these "religious exemption" laws that essentially make discriminating against someone on religious grounds legally acceptable would not gain so much traction. I think religion definitely "intrudes" upon the legal system. Hell, you're odds of even getting into the legal system or politics as non religious in the past were essentially 0%. You definitely can't be president if you aren't at least religious. I dont think this add said anything offensive or unreasonable

Nice argument. I applaud you :applause:

I do find religion to be a problem in politics but, like, to completely eliminate it and any bias that comes along with it, it just can't be done. Also, to label it an intrusion just goes to show a bias. He is trying to make government less religiously biased yet he is obviously biased himself which I'm like, at least he and religious politicians have something in common: they can be hypocrites :derpga:

Just so you don't make this mistake again:

A: A theory is still not fact. Nowhere in that definition of a theory does it state that a theory is fact

B: There are many theories that have been disproven because of the advent of technology. In fact, the Big Bang theory may have found an equal rival to compete with

C: I don't care

It is disingenuous to say you don't care when you took the time to make a three point reply to my post.

The word theory has multiple meanings. In colloquial use the word theory just means a guess, but in the scientific world it has a different meaning. I think you are having trouble juggling those two meanings. So here is a link that explains it with the example being the theory of evolution.

I hope that clears it up for you. I have nothing again you, and I'm not sure why you feel the need to have an attitude when addressing me. I was just clearing up a common misunderstanding.

We will one day be able to understand the creation of our universe. Also, the bible is hardly a moral compass.

‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’ (Genesis 22:2)

I think it is a moral compass, but it is dated. Morals are fluent and I think the bible fit the time it was written in but not (in full) in our modern western society.

If something is moral 2,000 years ago, but immoral now, its immoral. I kind of get what you're going for, but you probably haven't read the entirety of a bible, and in particular, I mean the cannon. Its chock full of crazy stuff.

Watched the video. He didn't say anything disrespectful in my opinion. He just wants respect for atheists, and he spoke his mind! But of course he gonna be ripped to shreds.

This reminds me of the paradox of tolerance, which is essentially something like... if Tolerant people are tolerant of all people, but do not approve of intolerance, then is anyone really "Tolerant" at all? Essentially your argument is no better than mine but almost empirically stated :sweep:

I think there's an easy solution to this problem though in that I believe it's okay to be intolerant of people or ideas that can be harmful. In the case of politics -- religion CAN be harmful and that's really as simply as I see it. On an individual level, its perfectly acceptable (again assuming it isn't harming others)

Also, Atheistic or agnostic approaches and stances do not actually come from a place of power or harm the institution of religion-especially Christianity in the west- and some social justice activists would accordingly argue that what might be "Anti-Religion Propaganda" or "Atheist Bias" is akin to Reverse Racism and doesn't actually exist or isn't actually discrimination:sis:

(I'm not sure I'm one of those people, but I definitely think that criticisms on both sides of the equation are not of equivalent value; e.g., Religious opinion of the Non-Religious definitely supersedes that of the reverse in most places, which is why we are having this discussion in the first place - some people feel attacked by something that really has no threat or potential for harm to either them or their religion itself.)

私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから

To convert someone you have to be switching them from one religion to another, which is not the case here, or ever, with Atheism. They're trying to help people get away from religion as a whole.

I don't believe that because "to convert" just means to change from one thing to another  It doesn't mean from one religion to another. It can work for faith to non-faith

The burning in hell part wasn't need but I agree so badly with what he's saying. Region and the state NEED to be kept separate, our decisions should not be determined by the church they should be determined by the people we elected to represent us.

Sorry for having an attitude. I thought you were starting beef :emma:

I've known a theory is an explanation, forgotten that it was an explanation of a law, though, but, in my perspective, we don't always have to base everything on science and what people tell us is viable. That is why I have my own theories on certain subjects and I will not be told, by religion or by science, how I am supposed to believe. I guess you could say I have a theory on theory :sis:

Again, I apologize

No, the congregation stopped talking to my aunt and kicked her out. They will not even say hi to her. She was expelled.
