New York University students are rallying in opposition against Israeli Apartheid Week that began on Monday. Supported by The World Values Network Partners and inspired by the words of Lady Gaga, Mendy Boteach, along with fellow NYU students Daniel Greenblum, Yaniv Hoffman and Jacob Sternberg, have countered the most recent attack against the Jewish state, and will promote Israel Pride Week until Thursday.

The students are positioned just a few feet away from the Israel Apartheid Wall in Washington Square Park. While they have strength in numbers, roughly 20 students, their most visible attraction is a 10 foot sign quoting Lady Gaga from her tour in Israel in 2014.

“You are strong, you are brave, you are confident. I f*cking love you, Israel!” The quote from the pop superstar and NYU alumna is followed by the student group’s hashtag – #Israelprideweek.

Mr. Boteach’s father, Observer columnist Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, said in an email, “I congratulate Mendy and all his friends for standing up for Israel in its great hour of need. And while I might have expressed it slightly different to Lady Gaga, let me concur: ‘I ABSOLUTELY love you, Israel.'”

squeala

the article doesn't even explain what israeli apartheid week is?! :wtf: way to make this all about gaga...

i don't really know anything about the israel/palestine conflict tbh

Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is an international series of events that seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies towards the Palestinians and to build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign.

Gaga supports the right side because she's not blinded by the anti-propaganda whether any of you like it or not. I love her. :flutter:

The fact that the quote is being used so badly out of context basically highlights it all :air:

"I ****ing love you [country]" is reiterated by basically every artist at every show, it's nothing specific to Israel in this case.
"You are strong..." is just another one of Gaga's pro-self esteem etc speeches; again it's nothing towards Israel specifically; she wouldn't have been so silly to say that in a political sense in the wake of almost 2000 innocent people from Gaza losing their lives.

This group are using an intentionally non-political statement for political means and whilst it's not really that important; it's an odd tactic :spin:

She says that in every country   I think Gaga supports a peaceful two-state solution.

At this point there has to be a two state solution. Israel isn't going anywhere and neither are the Palestinians. Being anti-Israel or being anti-Palestine is being foolish.

This is one of those rare situations where my politics and Gaga's clearly do not intersect.

Seems to me like Gaga is most likely completely ignorant of the history of the Palestinian / Israeli situation, and is just showing support and love because she doesn't really know any better.

I don't get why celebs don't speak out about this particular issue more. It's ridiculous, especially when you're playing a show there that's supposed to be about coming together and love and bravery.

Super ironic how her generic "I love this country" statement is used for this :rip:

"Israel Pride Week" made me wanna puke for a second there.
