Well you said "sold". Sales isn't the same thing as controversy.

And as for Hot 100, doesn't mean that it sold more if it's higher. Maybe there were less releases during Judas.

Uncle is certified platinum whereas Judas doesn't have any certifications.

Although you are correct in saying that Unconditionally outsold Judas in the US, RIAA certifications aren't an accurate way to measure that due to the fact that they have to be purchased. A lot of Gaga's songs and albums are behind in certifications (for example, BTW sold 4m copies in the US but still has yet to be even certified platinum). Nielsen Soundscan numbers are a more accurate measurement, as they actually track sales.

According to Nielsen Soundscan Judas has sold 942,000 copies in the US as of August 2013, whereas Unconditionally has sold 1,200,000 copies in the US as of January 2015.

OT: Both artists have 2 peaks IMO, statistical peaks and overall fame peaks. Gaga peaked statistically with The Fame, but felt biggest during TFM/early BTW.

Katy statistically peaked at Teenage Dream, but felt the biggest during Prism.

Yeah, two factors make it pretty inaccurate for tracking sales: the fact that certifications have to be purchased by the label instead of being added automatically, and the fact that streaming is now taken into account when songs are certified, which is why Bad Romance has a RIAA diamond certification even though it's only sold 5.6 million copies in the US.

And NP, the music charts are an interesting topic :)

Here is what you get when typing both artists in Google trends. Gaga is the blue line, Katy is the red line.

Katy's peak (in terms of Google searches) was September 2010, just after the release of TD. February 2015 was a very close second with the Super Bowl performance.

Gaga's peak on this chart is March 2010 (TFM era) and the corresponding headline for this peak is "Lady Gaga Sued By Producer"... Her second-highest peak was in December 2009, no doubt because of Bad Romance.

Katy and Gaga were very close to each other from 2012-July 2013 except for a couple peaks from their 2012 singles. Gaga beat Katy in August 2013, but Katy outsearched Gaga for every month since September 2013.

The blue line makes me awfully sad. :( Fun little thing to do for your favorite pop culture item, though.

TFM was Gaga's peak. TD was bigger than TFM Katy's peak and it's bigger than TFM era I think! But both are great! Don't make me choose!

Just no :sharon:

For Gaga it was TFM era, Id say especially the Telephone period, she was huge and everyone were blown away by her video. When Alejandro controversy came things started to go in downward trend, to reach deep low with Judas. So TEOG was actually the new begining of Gaga imho.

for Katy I think it was the beggining of Prism era. People started to really recognize her and she scored two 800M+ videos on vevo, for singles which had monster sales.

I find it hard to give a concrete answer as to what Katy's peak is because she did amazingly with singles and albums during Teenage Dream, but she's kicking ass with her humungous tour during PRISM :omg: I think after the tour's over we'll be able to collate facts and numbers and come to a more agreed answer

I came here to say the same thing. I just want to remind that Gaga's peak was on MJ's/Britney's/Madonna's peak level of epicness/media attention. Katy sold a lot, but the cultural and mediatic impact is not even comparable.

Yes yes yes.
