A lot of countries ​do now in the present (especially the smaller nations); what the major powers did in the past shouldn't hold us back from making positive changes  Same with the Olympics and World Cup; we should be giving them to nations that have commendable records in 'humanity'; which is the very basis of these events - not vanity states such as Qatar which use the events to assert the power of a regime.
