ShockPop 7,747
I have this theory that ARTPOP was never supposed to be successful. The reason I say this is because Gaga was pushed and pushed to get the album out, the theme changed a million times..But the main thing that stands out is Gaga giving us warnings before the album dropped. "Some of you will betray me" "This album isn't as cohesive as my previous work" "it could mean anything" "Art in the front (music in the back?)"Plus various other quotes where she basically says that if we like the quality of her work before then we will hate ARTPOP. The other reason I think it was planned to underperform was btw shattered her popularity in a huge way and alarm bells started ringing. At that point they knew there was going to be an album with Tony & they saw that as an opportunity to make a comeback... but first she needed to hit rock bottom and I think they needed something controlled to take her to the pits. Basically, they wanted to control the fall in order to make a bigger comeback.Another hint of this is shipping figures. If it was expected to do well then why didn't they ship the amount of copies they did for BTW? Just a thought from the back of my mind.
Fiona Apple 13,006
I love reading different theories .It's interesting.. And yeah I kinda agree with you. How could an album with this concept be a big hit?
Fiona Apple 13,006
But I disagree with some parts... For example.. Music IS art.And the "some of your will betray me" thing was for the tour ,it had nothing to do with ARTPOP I think
ByeBye49 161
I highly doubt they wanted it to under perform......
GagaUnderYou 4,993
nah why would you want your work to underpreform? gaga told us that ARTPOP was her best work and she probably won't ever top it. it just didn't do well with sales but the album itself is amazing. FATCAT 60,100
oh gosh I completely forgot about it now I'm seriously worried, if that's the case She's said that every album, don't even worry. This kitten over here (meow)
Didymus 34,380
Nice of you to forget all the incredible praise she gave the album "where she basically says that if we like the quality of her work before then we will hate ARTPOP" Where the hell did you get that idea
Red 98,060
It is March 2015 and people are still making up theories of why ARTPOP "flopped". If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.
MAC 1,942
Interesting theory but I highly doubt that they wanted the album to do poorly. The music business just doesn't work that way. Not that I know a lot about it but I can't see them doing this. I really like ARTPOP still and don't really get the hate it has these days to be honest. ShockPop 7,747
It would explain why they still toured with such a dud, though. They wanted to make their money back and knew they could do it.You can't jump up until you hit the bottom. I think it was all planned to do poorly - and that'll be part of the reason Troy left. He couldn't handle the planned flopping.
DeleteMyAccount 11,881
oh gosh I completely forgot about it now I'm seriously worried, if that's the case I think she's referring more to the process of creating the album: writing, recording, photoshoots, etc. There's no way she could have predicted the lukewarm reception the album got after being released. Harry 26,836
Lmao no I do not think Gaga would spend such time creating an album for it to intentionally fail. This is one of the most ridiculous theories I've heard yet tbh.
Katie14 4,828
But ARTPOP really didn't even sell that poorly and got the exact same metacritic score as both Prism and Bangerz.Of course this is subjective but I think ARTPOP is comparable to past Gaga albums in terms of musical quality. Gaga talked a lot about how hard she worked on ARTPOP and how much she likes the music. I really don't think she would put something out that she doesn't think is good. It wasn't like this awful failure of an album that people believe it to be.
Dorothy Gale 7,575
I just think she knew it was unlikely that she'd get BTW's sales again.
