Was Applause the best possible choice for the lead single?

I disagree. I think its one of those songs that initially you hear and you're like wtf is she thinking making this. And then the more you hear it the more you come to recognize how ****ing dope it is. I mean its odd sounding for radio (and before people roll their eyes I don't mean odd as in wholly avant-garde), but it definitely could have worked for more than just the fanbase. And while I don't think it would've been a lead single that immediately would have topped the charts, I think it would've served as a better first taste of ARTPOP and wouldn't have received the lukewarm response that Applause did. Honestly though, people already had their knives out ready to gash so its not like a change of a lead single would've made THAT much of a difference but idk. Plus, it has imo one of the best choruses shes ever made.

Venus was the perfect song to be released after Applause as a second single. I don't know what they were thinking. Do What U Want is amazing but they really should've waited and released that as the third single.

I like Venus, but the live performances (sorry) sound horrible. It's like Aura, Judas, Americano. Those are songs that probably sound better on the album instead of live vocals.

Sorry but those vocals at the beginning of the song just sound like dying cats. :( I'm not a fan of that.

That was honestly the only part of the performance I liked. I wish I could hear more Venus on the guitar tbh.

They aren't her best.

But dying cats?  :excuseme:

They should've done Aura as lead or Venus as second single following Applause. DWUW should've been the 3rd, which is usually the album selling single. And Gypsy should've followed as 4th. End era.

I really do feel bad for saying that but yes. It's like you're drunk at a party or with your friends and you grab the mic and go like "When you touch me I dieeeeeeeeeeeeee just a littleeeee insideeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". I don't know how to explain it, but like some random singing without taking pauses.

Aura or GUY could have been great first singles. I'm still glad of Applause's success, though, despite how unrelatable a song it is.

The ****ing catchy synthesizer were buried in the chorus under chaos, therefore it could not be the hit.

This arrangment in the chorus would've made appluse so much bigger, i talk about the arrangment in chorus (; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfK-qImVh-c

And DWYW had to be first single ( without R.Kelly, but an cool other unknown hip-hop-star ) - and Gaga as an R'n'B-Girl with dark hair, street style s-xy clothes and a cool video - Gaga as never seen before and also never heard before.

The - rihanna, blackmusic, r'n'b, eminem target group would have liked it and it's so radio friendly and catchy, but the presentation was a disaster.

No to be quite honest...it was a VERY safe song and the GP liked it and the fans...some of them. However, after GAGA...again...GAGA leaked Aura which was a dumb move to make...it ruined the hype for Applause cuz it was so underwhelming compared to Aura's epicness.

If Aura hadn't been leaked...Applause would've been received better I feel from both the fans and the GP. We were expecting so much from her...Aura was the perfect song, but she ruined its chances as first single by leaking it.

Did Applause do well...yeah, but not well enough. I truly feel not just cuz I like the song, but Aura would've been the single to really WOW people. It was a lil controversial, the melody was so infectious :teehee:  and beautiful, plus the video was gonna be the long awaited Telephone sequel.

It was set up to be her biggest first single era ever. Jimmy and Interscope did a terrible job with the single choices....

Would've appreciated this concept of singles:

Promo Singles: ARTPOP, Venus, G.U.Y.

First Single: Swine (with slow beginning on piano)

Second Single: Do What U Want

Third: Applause

Fourth?: Gypsy.

Applause was the best lead single as it was one of the more GP and radio friendly singles. DWUW was a great second single. GUY was also a big fan fave and was single-worthy.

Applause was was the best introduction to the era, it did its purpose. It was everything else afterwards that made the era fall short.

...let's be honest though there aren't many single worthy tracks on the album, most fall short.

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

Yes. It's not even my favorite song by a long-shot, but it was/is an instantly catchy Gaga classic (or soon-to-be classic). It encapsulates the sound and theme of ARTPOP splendidly too, I can't think of another track that would have been better.

Yes. But I also think G.U.Y. would have smashed as the lead single, especially with that video.
