Eros 26
The fact that they initially release DWUW as a promo single reflected their uncertainty about consumers' reception towards it. If they had been adventurous and released it as a lead single, I believe (based the popularity it received afterwards) it could have at least peaked at one of the top 3 spots. Despite peaking at 4th, Applause was a nonetheless one of the best from ARTPOP and a strong contender for a lead single. Speaking of being adventurous or being a risk-taker, not sure about Aura or Venus as lead though...think they might only peak at top ten or something (But then again there was supposed to be an epic video for Aura )
luckythisway 2,610
applause was the perfect lead single, it would've went number one if not but behind the hype of katy, miley and blurred lines. DWUW was the perfect second single and only needed a video to push it to become one of her biggest hits. gypsy was the perfect 3rd single and with a high profile performance at the grammys, it would've been a life saver for ARTPOP. then MANiCURE would come and slay the spring with s-xxx dreams feat rihanna coming to slay the summer and those songs would rival problem and fancy and rude
Yves 1,891
If you asked this question a year ago, I would've said no. But yes. It's the perfect lead single []

SweetEscape 654
Yes. Applause is an amazing song and it slayed the gp. Now bye.
NE Thing 1,459
Yes, heres why: 1. Aura, though monsters love it, the GP doesn't like the screaming verses and only likes the chorus, as man have said. But, the chorus would be slightly unsuitable to have on daytime radio. (Do you want to see me naked lover?)2. Venus, impossible. The song was not finished until late September, as said in an interview.3. GUY, same reason as Aura, slightly unsuitable theme.4. Sexxx Dreams, the proof is in the title.5. Jewels n Drugs, same as Sexxx Dreams.I could go on... Mentally Disturbed Llama.

SlaeUrAnus 15,976
Do What U Want should have been. Applause should not have even been an official single. In my messy era.
gagzus 16,008
MJH, Sex Dreams or Aura would've made good lead singles imo
Anderson123 38,490
Yes. Applause was the safest choice and the one that fit the most at that time because of her surgery and stuff. Personally, I'd have loved if Aura was the lead single but it's probably way too weird (even more than Bad Romance) to be the lead single, it could've scared people away, but maybe then release Applause as the second single ? I don't know.Do What U Want is a great song but it was one of those songs that you save for a third single release like The Edge of Glory, Just Give Me a Reason, etc. Probably the best song on ARTPOP that had the chance to be very successful, but it got ruined by the mess that happened with her manager and stuff.Venus could've also been released as a first or second single, it's like a classic Gaga song but maybe wouldn't have made an impact because it's not that BIG to probably stand on its own ? I don't know. I just don't see people going crazy over that song other than the fans. Plus I think this was the last song recorded for the album so it wasn't ready to be released in August. For those who are worried about Sex Dreams or the "Do you want to see me naked lover?" Please, you can hear more s-xual stuff being said by any other current pop hit on the radio, and Gaga is not music for kids, so I don't get why she'd have to censor her music. blacklistedd 599
That is completely untrue, ARTPOP is completely different sounding that TF, TFM and BTW. People only say that because they can't think of anything to criticize. The album was not a drastic enough departure to make people turn their heads and look at her again. She had fallen from grace in a way and she had some obstacles to overcome in releasing that album, one of which being to get people paying attention to her. ARTPOP was fine enough as a pop album, but was not significant enough in the scope of her discography to persuade people to rethink their indifference. Her approach for the era was partially as if she was performing a retrospective of her career, look at the VMA performance, look at the Applause and ARTPOP(song) music videos. She blatantly showed visual representations of her previous eras. You know I have positive and negative things to say, I just feel like maybe/possibly she tried to reach for peoples nostalgic heartstrings a bit and I don't think it worked. She started off promising though by initially going for a more fashionably minimal visual aesthetic (even with her alien Venus ensemble) which was quite capturing but then she immediately rebelled and went right to DIY level excessiveness. The album musically was contemporary but also recaptured the faux-disco pop and superficial fun of The Fame which was noticed not only by myself but many others as well with reason. It does not mean im saying she made a **** album, it does not mean she didn't make something that was commercially viable that could have performed better on the singles charts than it did, so you can chill out on your Gaga defense mode. I like ARTPOP. Im just saying, it obviously wasn't different enough. Born This Way was far loftier musically even if it didn't hit perfection in every aspect. I think its one of those songs that initially you hear and you're like wtf is she thinking making this. And then the more you hear it the more you come to recognize how ****ing dope it is. I mean its odd sounding for radio (and before people roll their eyes I don't mean odd as in wholly avant-garde), but it definitely could have worked for more than just the fanbase. And while I don't think it would've been a lead single that immediately would have topped the charts, I think it would've served as a better first taste of ARTPOP and wouldn't have received the lukewarm response that Applause did. Honestly though, people already had their knives out ready to gash so its not like a change of a lead single would've made THAT much of a difference but idk. Plus, it has imo one of the best choruses shes ever made.
