LoveandMagic 1,731
That's what I was just thinking. I was shocked when this happened because this was still when Take That, and by extension, Robbie, were very popular. Robbie's fanbase may be older, but they are loyal, which explains why he's still selling albums and doing sold out tours all these years later. My aunt and cousin actually said that the only reason they jumped back on the Take That bandwagon was because Robbie re-joined and after he left the group again, they're no longer interested and will just focus on buying his solo stuff now. Male artists always have it easier than female artists and Robbie's a prime example of someone who'll always be deemed relevant by the industry regardless of his age, so the Radio 1 abandonment of him was really surprising. I totally agree that there's nothing wrong with lending a bit of support in the first week or two of the single, just to see how it goes. If it's a hit, it throws the age theory out the window. People getting massive hits later in life is not uncommon. Kylie had Can't Get You Outta My Head in her 30's, Cher had Believe in her 40's and Madonna has had numerous hits in her 30's, 40's and even 50's. By outright banning certain people from radio, it only encourages the youth of today to judge music by the age of the artist, which is all wrong. I dread the day this happens to Gaga. I fear she may go through a rocky time in her 30's if she doesn't play her cards right and the thought of her doing really bad lead singles with features from young people in her 40's is just too tragic to contemplate. I also agree that Madonna need not worry though, as she's proved her legacy and will never be forgotten even if she flops from now on. It's artists who haven't had a break till later in life or have always appealed to an older demographic that have real cause to worry. I agree. Madonna is far from irrelevant. Not only is she a living legend, but she just had a successful performance at the Grammy's. Let the radio listeners decide if her stuff is any good. And like I stated earlier, I bet her concert will be sold out, and guess who will be in attendance? People of all ages! She may not be on the cusp of a new trend, but if she putting out great performances and material people enjoy, why couldn't she be expected to "keep up" with the younger set? Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
Matt Converse 18
Madonna was my favorite artist for a long time, it's Lady Gaga now but that happens with time in ten years it might be someone else. Being at the top for any length of time is something most people can only dream about. The reality of it is unimaginable.
craig 680
Beyonce has 6 years and 7 months before she turns 40. Cher had Believe in her 40's Actually she was 51. Her and Debbie Harry with Blonde both had UK #1s in 1998 at age 51, which is the record.

Retep 0
did they not play happy because pharrell is 41 He actually was a headliner for their music festival last year. I don't see why people are upset though, I think the report was filtered through in the wrong way and was misinterpreted overall. They're just saying that the track in itself isn't relevant to their listener base (which is true in the US too, even after the Grammy performance). I see Madge as a touring act now anyways who throws an album together to get a few bucks and as an excuse to announce another tour through LN. I like how most of this thread has left out this tidbit too (plus the news report kinda) 'an artist’s age is never a factor'

BillieGOAT 5,129
Y'all acting like they're being ridiculous.. THE BITCH IS 56 YEARS OLD. It's time for her to retire her crown, she had a good loooooooooong run. It's a good business move for the station also, they're making adjustments to cater to their audience. If you look at the big picture, this wasn't a hit at Madge, just a business move.
