The song is about Sheeran taking MDMA during a wedding celebration in Ibiza. He claims that during the experience he "fell in love with a beanbag" and that "[he] felt anxiety, [he] felt love, [he] felt warm, [he] felt a bit weird". Sheeran made a live PA to perform the song during co-writer Rudimental's set at Glastonbury Festival 2014 on 27 June 2014. It was revealed by Sheeran on 11 December 2014 at the BBC Music Awards that "Bloodstream" will be served as the fourth single from his album.

During a concert for BBC Radio 2, Sheeran confirmed that he and Rudimental would be reworking the track and releasing it as a joint single.

The original song's audio was released on 11 February 2015 on YouTube. The reworked version will be released on 29 March.
