Phoenix 17,395
This is so unfortunate. This comment goes to show the way in which the media can (and has) easily manipulate(d) the image of feminism. Certain people already have a predisposition to attaching to negative portrayals of feminists, so when single-sourced, unverifiable, inflammatory stories pop up, people just blindly accept it as it goes to support how they want to feel. It's the same thing that's happened with vaccinations. Or even more similarly, with Islam. It's incredibly unfortunate and leads to the culture of ignorance and misinformation that is so rampant in politics and society right now. Furthermore, the generalizations implied in this post are even more disconcerting, as is the seemingly prideful statement of hatred. This simple, unverified story caused you to react in a way that 1. generalized all feminists 2. intensified your hatred and 3. made you feel justified in your hatred. This is just sad as hell. I just never supported them and can't force myself. And no one can force me either. I have my right to support what I want and it's sad as hell that people judge you 'cause you don't support the same thing as they do. 💎
Bebe 17,289
I just never supported them and can't force myself. And no one can force me either. I have my right to support what I want and it's sad as hell that people judge you 'cause you don't support the same thing as they do. Of course people are going to judge you and your character based upon what your beliefs are and which groups you choose to associate with. How else would somebody make any sort of judgment on you? I would judge somebody who refused to support the gay community because of some ridiculous misconception or because of homophobia. Why you would choose to use a clearly fake, inflammatory and fringe story to cast judgment on feminists who you have "always been against" and "hateful" towards them is beyond me. Feminism is similar to gay rights activists. They are both fighting for equality and for an end to discrimination, for feminism it is about equality for women and for gay rights it is equality for the LGBT community. Any nonsense that Feminists hate men or that Gay people are promoting a "hidden homos-xual agenda" to convert heteros-xual people are just plain fear tactics aimed at disparaging said movements and slandering their name. Saying you don't support feminism is saying you don't support equality.
field 98
The media is mostly pro-feminist - it's the extremist fringe of feminism that has sadly tarnished it's image, because they are the loudest voices. That's mainstream 1st and 2nd wave feminism which I support. The is another wing that teaches women they are victims and that males as a class are the bad guys. Divisive disempowering nonsense. Media is not pro-feminist unless you're reading broadsheet, left-wing, liberal papers/outlets. Tabloids are rabidly anti-feminist. The "extremist fringe" is loudest, eh? Where, exactly? Facebook? Tumblr?!! Really depends the on the media you're consuming. Feminism has always seen patriarchy as the root of s-xual inequality, and it always will. The differences between feminists are in the methods by which it's believed this can best be changed e.g. socialist feminism, radical, liberal and so on. It's nothing to do with the period of time in which particular ideas were put forward, which is how the terms '1st/2nd wave' came about. There is no area of feminism that promotes women seeing themselves as helpless victims, that is completely contrary to feminist ideas. Explaining and illustrating inequalities that exist, pointing out specific situations or methods by which all people are oppressed (women and men) is not teaching anyone to be a victim, it's opening their eyes to a situation so they can do something about it. That's it. You can't support equality for women because you have read about someone identifying as feminist doing disgusting things? Umm ok. You sound like someone I used to know who dislikes gay people and LGBT causes because NAMBLA marched in the first gay pride parade in Washington. I mean it's disgusting to support an association like NAMBLA but I still want marriage equality and I am against any form of discrimination for being LGBT. It turns out I can support the LGBT community and still be against pedophilia.

Bebe 17,289
It's not one person, it's obvious, and you know that. No I don't. I'm a feminist, my mother is a feminist and most of the people I know in my life identify as feminist. We don't hate men, we don't think all men are rapists, we don't think men are evil, we don't think every individual man is responsible for hundreds of years of oppressive behavior, we just want gender equality. Why focus on a vocal minority that gets attention from some press in order to try and de-legitimise entire movements? The "feminists hate men" crap has been used since it's very inception when these feminazi's where asking for the rights to own property, to attend college, and to vote. They were dismissed as anti-family, anti-God, anti-men radical hedonists and the labelling continues until today because a group with a lot of power (men) tends to do whatever it can to maintain that power (dismiss equal rights as radical). I think it is extremely silly to dismiss an entire movement that pushes for equality because you have heard about some feminists who hate men. I'm thinking of Women's Studies profs, explicitly feminist sites like Jezebel, and feminists who write for left-leaning media like the Guardian, as well as social media. They do go on about women as victims and men as victimizers a lot. Maybe the liberal feminists (aka mainstream 2nd wave) have less to say because they've basically achieved their goals, so we're left with Radfems being loudest. They don't speak for most women - plenty of moderate women are critical of them.

Shadow 6,697
Technically, this isn't news, so let us have the feminist debate in another thread. Closing. Stand in the light, cast your shadow.
