US Congress has approved keystone XL a pipeline to bring 830,000 barrels a day from Canada down to refineries in the gulf of Mexico

There is still a great deal of uncertainty over the Project because Neither the Congress nor Senate had the 2/3 vote majority required to override the President (Obama) should he choose to veto it and not sign the bill.

Environmentalists still dislike the project due to potential leaks and its support of oil sands development.

Those in favor however argue all the oil being pumped in Canada has so far managed to get to the US despite insufficient pipeline capacity by simply using trains and trucks so lack of pipeline wont stop oil sands development. Also some make the case that if oil isnt produced in Canada, that market share could be  won by other Countries with lower environmental standards such as Venezeula that produces the same type of oil sands oil with less environmental regulation, and on top of that have to be shipped across entire Oceans.

I still do not know how I feel about this. I feel rather than consume even more non-renewable resources, we should be developing methods for renewable energy. I just find using even more petroleum is a waste when there exists the technology to combat the overuse of materials but companies would rather care for the money than the future of the posterity

one has nothing to do with the other

u can develop green energy while still approving a project like this.

It makes no sense to be carrying stuff by train and trucks congesting roads and railways (yes there are already complaints of some products having a hard time getting transportation slots because oil is taking up so much of it). Not to mention its not stopping oil sands development anyway

This isnt about producing oil or not... this is about proper infrastructure . Thats what people dont seem to understand

goodbye this disaster of a project better be vetoed obama

ok i wanna know ur basis for assuming this project is disasturous

this generation is so into global warming to the point that they dont a--lyse anything anymore to really understand anything. If its a big project associated with energy, everyone assumes its bad and wont even bother looking up all the info

fanaticism if you ask me

PS: im generalizing. not saying this is the case with u. thats why im asking whats ur basis for your opinion

In addition to the understandable and logical environmental concerns, I find TransCanada to be such a disgusting company that absolutely embodies the stereotype of the corrupt, greedy, disgusting oil company. From prematurely (and allegedly illegally) filing for eminent domain back in 2011 to disrupting the land of indigenous people (over which they have absolutely no legal authority) and their attempt to just throw money at indigenous causes to try and "fix" it, their behavior has been disgusting. TransCanada hasn't proven itself to be an ethical company by any standards and shows that it's only concern is the bottom line. And I'm supposed to have trust in them that the pipeline is going to have above minimum specifications? Bull****. And I haven't even started on their beyond questionable third party assessments of their plans. Nor do I even mention the minuscule amount of temporary jobs the pipeline creates.

OR THE FACT THAT WE'RE INVESTING MORE IN NON RENEWABLE RESOURCES.

The way that renewable resources are treated compared to non-renewable is an actual joke. Republicans keep pushing studies to a--lyze the health effects of windmills and increasing limits on the placement of windmills, yet they want to fast track and ignore concerns regarding any type of fracking or pipelines.

The oil industry is corrupt as ****. We should be moving away from oil, not investing in it more.

well... most oil companies are unenthical. TransCanada just happens to be large so they get more attention. Not to mention much of their operations have been around indigenous land so they had that obsticle not every Corporation has had. Im sure most others would end up doing the same thing

In any case...

- why transport oil by rail and congesting other products from getting to market? there are rising complains about that as oil by rail keeps rising exponentially due to lack of proper traditional infrastructure like pipelines.

- Even if you could stop Canadas oil sands (which you cant, we already dont have enough pipelines but due to other methods of transportations thats not stopping oil production increases and further investment)... where you gonna get it from instead? Venezuela?...

Understand that conventional oil production (traditional liquid oil) has peaked and entered a chronic and terminal decline since 2005. New production has been coming from and will continue to come from oil sands and shale. At least Canada and the US have regulations that help reduce environmental impacts... Some other Countries with the capacity to increase production with these reserves actually have way less standards and if you gave them the market share, they would be worse polluters

- Also transportation from other Countries means having to ship in across Oceans which produces lots of CO2 to transport plus risks spills on Oceans which are often bigger spills than inland spills

- Lastly pipelines now are not as dangerous as they used to be. they have more shut-off valves and better pressure detecting technology that allows them to detect leaks faster shut off flow faster

You have to understand... This isnt about not going into green alternatives or whatever. This isnt even about production itself... This about how your going to transport it.

Makes more sense to transport by pipeline which is designed for this than other methods... and Even if you could stop Canada which you cant, buying from other Countries instead isnt necessairily a great alternative. Gotta look from all angles
