Whispering 18,865
Oh god, please do your research on the Grammy voting process before replying. Every time a single rock album is nominated it always wins because of the way the voting is split. I'm not going to look it up for you on my phone but just Google 'how Beck won AOTY' and there are plenty of articles detailing the insane voting process. It's not my opinion or perception that black artists are always robbed at the Grammys and that black genres are relegated to the sidelines, it's just a fact. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in a bubble You need to do your research. AOTY award: Norah Jones over Springsteen OutKast over The White Stripes Ray Charles over Green Day Dixie Chicks over RHCP Herbie Hancock Foo Fighters Taylor Swift over Dave Matthews Band Adele over Foo Fighters That's seven out of the last thirteen years. More than 50 per cent of the time a rock album has been beat out. In the last fifteen years, the AOTY award has been won by a black artist eight times. That's more than 50 per cent. Beyoncé simply didn't get enough votes this year, and it wasn't due to a problem with rock albums "always winning" or black artists " always getting robbed". It's true - nominate only 1 black artist (or have Sam Smith the only UK sing-songwriter) vs 2 indie rockers, I bet Beck doesn't win. Vote splitting probably determines many Grammies. My research comment was about the voting process Every year I listed, there was only ONE rock album nominated. Yet, even at that, there were seven artists who were able to still beat those single rock albums. Beyoncé's album wasn't one of those this year. Ah my bad, not true for all of them but for some you're right. But most of those are country artists aka white people with guitars, and that demographic is even stronger than rock. Again, it's not an issue of racism, just a question of disproportionate voting demographics. The only time a rapper has won was Outkast and they had to have one of the biggest pop songs of the decade on their album to achieve that.

You should look at how much classic rock struggled to win or even get AOTY nominations in the 60-70s when it was new. Same story, except rock became mainstream. Rap still isn't mainstream in that way. Black people can't have it both ways - can't act like rapping is a black thing and it's illegitimate for other races to succeed in it, and then complain it doesn't win AOTY enough. You want that kind of universal acclaim, it needs to be everyone's music, with room for white suburban males and white teen girls rapping about stuff from their experience. However, instead on becoming like rock or pop, it's stayed like Country Music - a sub-genre associated with a certain sub-set of America and certain stereotypes, with only a few acts crossing over to mainstream. However, instead on becoming like rock or pop, it's stayed like Country Music - a sub-genre associated with a certain sub-set of America and certain stereotypes, with only a few acts crossing over to mainstream. True, the winners have been questionable since day one. Although I don't think the classic rock albums you're thinking of were as mainstream as you're making it out to be. Rock music was very counter-culture back then as rap often is now, and the Grammys generally awarded softer bands that basically made pop music. I doubt many middle-aged people were listening to Zeppelin and Pink Floyd back in the 70s, the music was for younger generations just like rap. The issue is just worse with rap today because the racial difference leads to much bigger controversies and snubs. I agree that not that many rappers have crossed over to the mainstream, but even the ones who do almost never win these awards, plus they get it totally wrong even within their own categories where cross-over appeal shouldn't apply. And it goes for RnB acts too.
