Psychedelic 1,098
Oh Kanye I agree that Beyonce had a better album imo, but beck is definitely extremely talented and deserving too This!

KrisFromMars 9
It's tantrums like this that ensure Kanye will never be truly credible. He's got the critical acclaim, but as long as he's married to Kim Kardashian and throwing his toys out the pram every time someone wins an award who he deems unworthy, he's never going to be an overall respected artist in the eyes of the public. So much for thinking he'd changed since the whole Taylor fiasco. And that was at the MTV awards which isn't really taken seriously anyway. You can't be pulling stunts like this at the Grammys. Just like you can raise hell at the People's Choice Awards if you want but do it at the Oscars and you'll be permanently banned. By disrespecting the voting process, Kanye may never win another Grammy again and won't be able to blame it on race for once because he'll know the real reason why. Or if he does still blame it on that, no one's going to buy it. I'm glad that this situation has at least alerted people to the issue that Beyonce receives way too much credit. Her artistic input has always been minimal and her music has never broken any boundaries. To say that she has better artistry than a proper singer/songwriter who plays his own instruments and is the sole writer and producer of his albums is ludicrous. And you don't even have to be familar with Beck's music to understand that. End of thread! I'm sorry but I will even throw the Gags card. On artistic credibility beyonce doesn't even touch Gaga. Gaga deserves way more recognition than just the copy Madonna crazy girl. BTW album was amazing and is still my fave album because the fans basically wrote it. I hate Adele beat her
XoXoJoanneGaga 629
This si a stupid comment. How do you know they were biased over white men? You have no proof to sustain your allegations and you rely on your own perception of the world. Just no . Oh god, please do your research on the Grammy voting process before replying. Every time a single rock album is nominated it always wins because of the way the voting is split. I'm not going to look it up for you on my phone but just Google 'how Beck won AOTY' and there are plenty of articles detailing the insane voting process. It's not my opinion or perception that black artists are always robbed at the Grammys and that black genres are relegated to the sidelines, it's just a fact. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in a bubble
uo111 5,250
Only three black people have won AOTY in the last 20 years though, and only one in the last 10 years. It's not a secret at all that black music is snubbed by The Grammys, it's not like I'm saying anything controversial It's just a fact that if a black artist is up against a white artist they have an extremely low chance of winning, regardless of musical quality or impact. 3 out of 20 is actually proportional to the population so you can't even make the argument that white people disproportionally win... Just admit you wanted Beyonce to win. But don't try and make something seem racist that pretty obviously isn't. The voting process is political but not racist. When you say 'most people don't even like rap' that's exactly what I'm talking about, the awards are voted upon by demographics who don't even listen to rap or r&b music, despite those two genres producing some of the most brilliant, acclaimed, and influential albums of the past 20 years. I don't care that much about Beyoncé but she certainly deserved it over Beck. I guarantee I'm one of maybe 10 people on this board who's actually listened to Beck. His album was boring and complacent, maybe he deserved to win in the 90's when he actually made great, forward-thinking and relevant music, but not with this album. That would be an issue in say, the rap category. Only one award is awarded for AOTY, so having general people vote on it isn't just fine, it's perfected. In the context of rap or urban awards, your argument makes perfect sense. But here it isn't relevant because AOTY is for everyone. They choose Beck so people would stop complaining about how the Grammy's mean nothing. Literally, the only reason people are complaining is because it's Beyonce that lost. Pharrel deserved it over Beyonce so if anything, that's what people should be mad about.

Yea it is a huge issue in the rap category (see: Macklemore sweep last year) but it still matters in the general category. My point was that when there's a disproportionate amount of older, white voters who will inevitably sidle into the rock category, it can lead to some inaccurate results that don't represent the best, most relevant albums in music today. It's not an incredibly serious issue of course, it's just an award show. But it's still annoying and I feel bad for the artists and more of them should speak out on it. And as for Pharrell deserving it.. no way. His album was insanely mediocre for someone who used to be one of the best innovators in urban pop music, he even said he didn't want to make it until the label offered him a huge amount of money to capitalize on the Happy success. Would have been one of the worst AOTY wins ever, and the sad thing is he was probably the runner-up, I wouldn't be surprised if a ton of people voted for him just cause Happy was on the album. iloveit123 130
I'm not sure if thid has been posted or there is a thread for it but I'll reiterate Shirley Manson's words towards this absolute buffoon douchebag: "Dear Kanye West It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK. You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt. In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete twat. Ps.I am pretty certain Beyonce doesn't need you fighting any battles on her account. Seems like she's got everything covered perfectly well on her own."

AOTY Grammy often becomes a lifetime achievemnet award. See Ray Charles and Herbie Hancock both winning in the last decade. 2 blacks, but not the black music of right now. Pharrell got votes, not for Happy, but his work 10 years ago. Beyonce's cultural peak was Sasha Fierce, which produced 3 bigger hits than anything on her latest effort. It's just now Beyonce has the media behind her more than even, because the kids that were fans 15 years ago have grown to adult influence. All 3 get credit for past work. chiuga 1,955
the reason Beck won is simple: he is an artist/musician while Beyoncé is a performer/entertainer as far as she goes
