Jordan vows relentless war to 'eradicate' IS

Amman (AFP) - Jordan said air strikes against the Islamic State group are only the start of its retaliation for the burning alive of one of its pilots, vowing to "eradicate" the jihadists.

Jordan's military said "dozens of jet fighters" struck IS targets on Thursday, hitting militant training camps as well as weapons and ammunition depots.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh told CNN the operation was "the beginning of our retaliation over this horrific and brutal murder of our brave young pilot.

"But it's not the beginning of our fight against terrorism and extremism."

The gruesome murder of pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh, captured by IS in December after his F-16 crashed in Syria, has sparked grief and deep anger in Jordan.

Judeh declined to reveal Jordan's military plans but said it would hit the militants with all its might.

"We're upping the ante. We're going after them wherever they are, with everything that we have. But it's not the beginning, and it's certainly not the end," he said.

"We're going to go after them and we will eradicate them... We are at the forefront. This is our fight."

Jordan has conducted regular air raids against IS across the border in Syria as part of a US-led campaign against the Sunni extremist group.

Other nations are already fighting IS for months though

 

But anyway, I do get it. I just think of the thousands of IS fighters in our own countries and am afraid of their revenge. But I guess that would come sooner or later anyway. *sigh* Sad, just sad.

Ofc others are fighting as well, but they don't really intervene like I think Jordan will do.

Yes, a terrorist attack in EU will happen, I'm sure. Idk when or where. But they will attack us nevertheless. Even if we wish that we could watch away, it's "our people" who partly fight for ISIS.

I strongly believe action should be taken to support local troops in regaining control of the oil fields taken by ISIS and diplomatic action with strong international support is needed to place sanctions on countries such as Iraq and Turkey who are buying black-market oil from ISIS.

Crack down on ISIS’s supply routes and weapons supply and hurt them like that. ISIS wants war, they want countries to start bombing Iraq and Syria. The bombings might be necessary, but it's not going to help stabilize the region. Humanitarian efforts are needed to prevent further radicalisation.

Mass airstrikes are not a long term solution. Reclaiming the oil fields and discouraging black market oil-deals will prevent ISIS from making money and funding their efforts and will do more harm to them in the long run. Bombs just make the area more unstable and leads to more people vulnerable to indoctrination and radicalisation.

I basically typed a paragraph like this yesterday, but I think it's important considering the growing fear people have that's putting pressure on governments to go to war. That's what ISIS wants, it's just going to help their cause.

Plus, it will also draw that many more people to the group for several reasons, it's been that way since the "beginning".

 

Another side note is that I think citizens should be much more aware of the political dynamics surrounding this whole mess, including the role of our own governments in it, not just in this case but in the whole history of Western intervention in that area. It makes me sad that all of a sudden this "new enemy" comes out of the blue when maybe public pressure could've prevented at least some of the scope of this drama if there was more public awareness. It's no secret that, to put it bluntly, the West has been funding ISIS (and other terrorist groups for their own, power-hungry purposes) itself.
