I didn't say progress was only positive. Progress only pushes forward. The United States has shaped the modern world, and in my opinion most of the shaping has been for the better, but has been attained by both great triumphs and great failures. But nevertheless it has progressed. 

 

As far as the nuclear bomb is concerned...the weapon is terrible, the technology is fantastic. The development of the nuclear bomb could well have been the dawn of a new era in technology. Nuclear potential is only just being untapped.

The United States isn't perfect, but it's done more for progress in this world than any other nation on the planet. It still has its flaws, but the same can be said for every nation.

People can be anti-american if they wish. Germany is a beautiful country that I had the privilege of visiting this past summer, and the people are even more beautiful. I wish tensions between all nations could be eradicated, but with so many diverse cultures and beliefs, it's just not possible at this time.

Plus, feelings left over from the world wars can still be felt all around the world, as they were times that shaped and re-shaped the world, and certainly Germany and the U.S. were on opposing sides of those conflicts.

As far as the surveillance goes, it's disappointing to know that any nation is essentially spying on any other nations, but the truth of the matter is that all nations spy on all other nations. The United States has assets in Germany in the same way that Germany has assets in the U.S., and I'm sure Germany has always spied on the U.S. as well. It's simply the nature of a more globalized age.

p.s. I love Germany. Such a uniquely interesting country, with such a rich culture and history.

As far back as the black slavery years, the Southern States have always been a drag on over-all progressive standards of the US as a Nation. I think the Federal Government needs to exert more authority in some matters instead of worrying about loosing ppls votes from whatever States disagree with stuff

It's very interesting because while the U.S. isn't the most socially progressive country in the world right now, the idea of human rights basically developed because of the United States, and its recognition that the common man deserves equal rights to those in authority. Then there's innovations in science, a few of these being space exploration, flight itself, the automobile, the personal computer, nuclear energy etc. Then one could take into account it's leadership in bringing the nations of the world together, through the creation of The United Nations, something once thought impossible. The idea that the nations of the world could all come together to resolve conflicts and solve both social and humanitarian problems is incredible. In the aftermath of both world wars, it was the U.S. which led the reshaping of the world. Then of course there is its financial sway over the world.

 

But yes, I do wish the U.S. would resolve social issues in a quicker manner, but when it's people are so diverse, and stem from so many backgrounds and cultures, finding a middle ground which everyone can agree on can sometimes prove difficult. It's both the greatest thing and the worst thing about the U.S. Everyone's voice is heard, but with so many voices, direction can be hard to acquire at times.

Many of the things you use in life would've been created by the US. For example to type this comment you would've used either a computer with Windows or a Mac (both American) or a phone by Apple or running Android (again, both American). You posted it to the internet (invented by the the US government in the 60s) on a website about an American entertainment figure. Just saying  :P

The first computer is Zuse Z1 which made by Konrad Zuse (a German) 

 

US improved those things, yes. But they didn't invent them. But as I said again I know that US invented others things, but let's not act like US invented everything.

Okay, I am German. My political views are far from being far right conservative or a supporter of Russia and its continuing violations of human rights, but I do get the recent resentment towards America. The father of my friend (a professor of Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) was interrogated and HARRASSED by the CIA and NSA because they spied on a telephone call he made to his colleague about nuclear physics and the properties of uranium. The USA takes its paranoia concerning safety too far.

And I'm overall bewildered by this passionate & blind patriotism a lot of Americans seem to perpetuate. The NSA is lawfully able to act against the government's orders, the Kuklux clan is still vital and partially even supported by the American police force, more than 100 black people got shot by the police because of racial profiling in 2015 alone, gay & transgender people face serious discrimination on the back of "religious freedom" and half of the population even refuses to see those FACTS as problems.

Personally, I think that inventions stuff came up because Germany just recently regained a tiny bit of national pride, due to succeeding in major sports events and people realizing that Germany is not as sh*tty as the average German has thought or was made to believe from being exposed to rather unfriendly foreign responses or the "Denazification process" imposed by the Allied forces back when WW2 ended.

I kind of felt the change myself. Before 2006, when the FIFA world cup came to Germany, you would have been lynched for being a German public figure and saying "I love my country." Patriotism and Nazism have been synonymous for a very long time here. I've had a a very hard time myself identifying as "German" because of all the baggage that comes with it. I've tried really hard to identify with the countries that my ancestors came from for a veeeery long time, because still the first thing that comes to mind when hearing Germany abroad is "Nazi" or "Hitler". It's not that obvious anymore, but it's so internalized in tiny things. Everytime I watch videos from the Ellen DeGeneres show for example where Actors play that game where they are supposed to do foreign accents they all resort to that stereotypical angry Hitler-like voice when upon hearing they have gotta do a German accent. It's hard to cherish your culture, when everytime you interact with some average Joe, your cultural idendity is reduced to one major f*ck up. And that changed a little bit, I feel like a lot of people are tired of being the butt of the joke.

Not to generalize all American people, but I come from a region that is a tourist hub for Japanese, Korean and American people, and a lot of the American tourists are so disrespectful. I've literally had at least 10 American tourists "jokingly" ask me when Hitler is coming back or where we hide our Nazis from the tourists or see curse out random strangers in the streets feeling invincible because they think nobody is able to comprehend English here. I feel like the Anti-America sentiment also stems a little from that. At least from the region where I come from.
