COUNTY, MI -- An 11-year-old girl was able to scare off a suspect -- later taken into custody -- during a home invasion in Lapeer County's North Branch Township.

(UPDATE: Police say 11-year-old girl used her own shotgun to scare off robbers in Lapeer County)

Deputies from the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department responded around 3:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 to a Five Lakes Road home where the girl was home alone when a vehicle pulled into the driveway.

A Lapeer County Sheriff's Office news release states one person knocked on all the doors and forced their way inside the home when there was no response. The girl locked herself inside a bathroom and hid in a closet with a shotgun.

The suspect eventually opened the bathroom door and closet where the child was hiding with the weapon. The girl aimed the shotgun at the suspect, who then fled from the home.

Police said the girl was not harmed during the encounter.

The suspect's vehicle was located around 30 minutes later in Imlay City by local police, with assistance from the Almont Police Department, Michigan State Police and Lapeer County Sheriff's deputies.

Two occupants in the vehicle -- a 53-year-old Detroit man and 31-year-old Detroit woman -- were taken into custody without any resistance and remain at the Lapeer County Jail pending formal charges.

The case remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office.  Anyone with information has been asked to contact Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at 810-245-1381 or [email protected].

Well, that's good. Guns can actually save your life in some instances.

The real concern to me is how that girl was able to get her hands on a shotgun. Irresponsible parents tbh.

Not really. You don't know the whole situation.

I saw this story on ATRL, and somebody said that people around there learn to use guns early. So, she must have known how to use it.

Possibly. It makes me uneasy that children handle guns though.

Not going to speak on this as it may not be the best place to speak favorably of guns. Wonder what would have happened if she didn't have the shotgun...

Her shotgun or her parents? :emma: lorde

"The 12-gauge shotgun is her weapon," said Lapeer County Sheriff Detective Sgt. Jason Parks. "She and her father are into hunting and avid sportsmen. She was familiar with that weapon."

Parks praised the girl's responsibility, poise and composure.

"She is fully capable of staying there by herself as we can clearly see based on this situation," he said. "She was able to defend herself from an intruder and be able to resolve an event even most adults would be taken aback by."

Added Parks, "She is fully capable of making sound, good decisions," he said. "And be a protector of her home."
