Americano 31,061
The EU is such a trainwreck ever since the 2008 crisis. 2008-2018 will be their lost decade, just like Japan had theirs in the 00s. Austerity amid an economic freefall is the worst possible solution, and then now all of these countries are screwed with not only high unemployment and stagnant GDP growth, but also mountains of payments that need to be made on loans and/or debt. They shouldve followed the US and China in big stimulus spending, with cuts to be made later. Hence why those two are powering ahead economically with gradually falling deficits, and the EU is dealing with a father-son situation where one doesn't wanna pay up. Mast 980
You better talk with more respect when referring to the country that taught you what civilization is . Except not? Ancient Egypt was a civilization before Ancient Greece was, not to mention Democratic societies existed long before Athens (see Mesopotamia). Greece just happens to have been one of the most well examples of such societies, so it's not surprise we site it as the origin of Democracy even though Greece borrowed it. Not that you should be proud of that since a majority of the Greek social cast and a sizable amount of their economic system relied on the institution of slavery. Valextra 58
Italy is the 4th biggest economy in Europe and Spain is the 5th. Maybe there are problems there but they're still part of those who rule the union along with Germany, France and the UK. Don't forget that lol Thanks for pointing it out, we have our very hard economical problems, it's true, but from some messages it seems that we are from the third world (with all the respect clearly). Italy is still the 8th biggest economy in the world.
kubrick 1
Way to judge a whole civilization, put them all in the same basket and judge them Yeah, they made an assessment of the civilization as a whole. He said nothing of the Greeks as people. Why are you looking for a fight?

Hence why those two are powering ahead economically with gradually falling deficits, and the EU is dealing with a father-son situation where one doesn't wanna pay up. There's many problems in the Eurozone that cause the stagnation... The biggest is the big debt crisis. It's mostly not the austerity that's causing the stagnation. Europe is in a gigantic debt crisis. Southern Europe has extremely high government deficits, while in other countries the consumers have very high debts causing low consumer spending causing stagnation. Millions of houses in the Netherlands have a mortgage bigger than the house is worth that limits the consumer spending of people greatly. I think this stagnation will last for a few years, and then consumer spending will be higher again. The hovernment should try to have no deficits till then with cuts in no-growth sectors and keep reforming because investing in the economy is not that useful as long as people have so much debt. France is a recent example of an economy with a debt crisis investing instead of cutting, and it didn't pay off at all. It's not whether or not you do austerity, it's how you do it. Goosey 3,017
Greece is silly. They were even giving pastry chefs, radio announcers, hairdressers and 600 other professions full pensions and letting them retire at 50, with an annual pension that is equal to their last year's full yearnings and then they temper tantrum and demand the Germans bail them out when it's revealed they simply don't have the money for their foolish and extravagant social programs. Luc 4,776
yes, for the rich For everybody who works or has worked or is going to work. Middle >>> I'm social liberal they should lower taxes and not give too big amounts of money to jobless people, but at the same time make sure everybody has free access to healthcare, education (incl. university) and have money well-distributed, so the biggest 1% don't earn 90% of all money but at the same time people stay motivated to work. I think they should put a 50%+ tax on heritage, as unbeneficial that might be for me

Luc 4,776
LOL We're allowed to say that Greece is a financial mess and that it's thanks to their own governments and since it's a democracy thanks to its own people. They profited from overspending for years and they profited from low interest pre-2008 thanks to northern/western Europe's financial stability and and credit status. They abused it. That Athens is the best-known example of a direct democracy is unrelated. The Greeks will have to keep privatizing, reforming and cutting because what Greece does affects not just their own country hut the whole union. What Syriza wants to do is spend more, which means that other European countries will have to give money to Greece again which they probably won't even give back. Syriza wants to focus on economic growth, but Greece was already projected to have an economic growth of 2.3% in 2015 if ND stayed in the government. Now it's probably going to be lower while also having a bigger deficit.

If so, its part of the bond market and they cant just "not pay it back" without defaulting and creating a huge financial meltdown all over their markets (and Europes too). No Country will purposely default unless they absolutely have to Thats probably why they are asking for debt forgiveness. The debt beijg forgiven is the only way they can not pay it back without huge concequences. If they just decided they wouldnt pay it back, it would backfire big time and i think they know that.
