Gay people were specifically sent to death & concentration camps along with every other marginalized minority, that's a fact. Why should we not think of that too? Why not talk about how things are starting to repeat themselves? It feels wrong to invite somebody who is so avid to disrespect homos-xuals and starts re-criminalizing them to an event that is there to commemorate them as well. I do believe that inviting Putin wouldn't be a good idea not just because of the LGBT rights harming but precisely because of the Crimea anexion. Aristoteles used to say that democracy is a governement of poor rabble. Why are you talking about what Aristoteles said? That was over 2000 years ago, we have a lot more experience and information than he did. We are dealing with how Russia's more autocratic, but that's not the topic. Am I deluded ? Probably (I believe everyone is deluded to certain level). But the fact that we believe in our country and stick together is why Russia has been one of the strongest country for centuries. The total lack of any nationalism in western countries is questioning and will probably have deep consequences (also considering the recent issues). Comparing banning gay parades (which are not banned only in russia) to concentration camps, lol. You didn't read it well. Russia is not particularly strong right now. It hasn't been for a few decades. Europeans are way more peaceful, democratic and the system of justice here protects minority groups from discrimination. We also have a way better economy, healthcare, education, etc. We have everything we want. Nationalism is a bad thing, why would you be proud of the place you're born in? It's just a random circumstance, you could also be born in Cambodia and you would be nationalist for Cambodia, too? That just doesn't make sense. You need to remember that borders are artificial, man-made. Other animals don't care about borders. Globalization is a process that is occuring and it will only become more and more, and there's nothing to prevent that. If Russia wants to think in a way that was usual for a century ago - we need to invade this country, invest in military, oppress minority groups, oppress opposition, give less rights to the citizens - than they're free to do so, but they won't keep up with the West. He's a misguided leader, snaking his way into positions of power and playing political games, sure, but is choosing not to invite him any better than him? How does stooping to his level make anything better? Ignoring him improves nothing, pretending he doesn't exist helps nothing, we should be making more of a united effort to cooperate with him as an international community. Considering Soviet forces did liberate Auschwitz, I feel its disrespectful to not invite them based on the idiocies of their current government.
