Plus, there are other ways to protect yourself. And maybe if there were less guns in households, Americans would be a little less paranoid ;) Because criminals totally follow the law and if guns are illegal to possess then they won't get them. They may be helpful and life saving for a few people, but looking at it statistically more people die because of them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as a European it sounds like this unfortunate story isn't the only one to happen. There have been so many accidents and murders, it just breaks my heart that children keep losing their parents (vice versa) because they've been careless for a minute. It would be harder for them to get them. I live in France where guns are totally illegal, and if someone in my country were to shoot a bullet with an illegal gun, it would instantly make the news. The more you add guns to the equation, the more you'll have casualties. People drink and drive. People text and drive. Lots of easily preventable deaths. It would be harder for them to get them. This situation really breaks my heart, and everytime I hear stories like these it makes me so sad. How many more deaths do we need for people to understand that guns are a problem? I'm aware that this is all cultural and that America won't change in a day, but I really hope we're heading towards a tougher control of guns.... It shouldn't be that easy for people to own a gun. True, in each case one's own decisions result in a tragic accident. I'm not saying "hey murica, get rid of ya guns," because it's impossible to get rid of something that plays a huge role in keeping criminals tamed and society as we know it going. The fact that the right to own a gun has been there from the beginning only proves that you couldn't get rid of them without inviting criminals to a party. Maybe the U.S. is infamous for gun accidents because there are just so many citizens (unlike Germany or the UK) and any and everyone can get a gun, if they try. I don't know, I just wish there would be stricter rules and INTENSE training for people trying to get one for protection. But a nation that was built on the right to possess a gun cannot simply get rid of them, unfortunately. So you can keep your guns and hunt and feel safe while I keep dreaming. The difference between this case and the norm is that majority of people lock up their guns in a case with the ammo in a separate area and the keys hidden. This is a very hunter-oriented community, and conservationists depend on hunters to keep wild animal populations in check. Also, I live about 20 minutes from the nearest police station. If someone were to break in and seriously threaten my family and help is 20 minutes away what am I going to do? Think, "Well, at least I threw out those guns instead of educating myself on how to handle them correctly." Demand police patrols in your area, especially at night. Like why on Earth all of the people in your community think y'all should be doing what the authorities are supposed to do. You pay your taxes after all you should expect them to do their job. :haha: That being said I'm not engaging in any kind of gun arguments, cause that will just end up in Goose telling me I'm a stupid European after 2 pages of fighting.
