Prometheus 1,494 Posted January 19, 2015 Share Posted January 19, 2015 (Elmo, MO) A 9-month-old boy has died Monday after an accidental shooting at a home in Elmo, according to the Nodaway County Sheriff's Department. Authorities said a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot his 9-month-old brother in the head with a .22 Magnum. Deputies responded to the home on the 100 block of S. Scott Street around 9:00 a.m. after authorities said the infant's mother thought he was shot with a paintball gun. The infant was airlifted to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where he was pronounced dead. Really sad. Although these accidental shootings are extremely rare around here, it is a sobering reminder that you need to lock up your guns (unloaded) and the ammo separately with keys hidden away. We had several guns in the house when I was growing up, but they were always kept in the gun case with the ammo stored separately. The keys were constantly hidden and moved around. A lot of people hunt around here and the nearest police station is 20 minutes away, so calling 911 isn't a viable option if serious danger is happening. I'm just preparing for the gun haters. As I said before, I live in a small town community and every household has guns. The difference between this case and the norm is that majority of people lock up their guns in a case with the ammo in a separate area and the keys hidden. This is a very hunter-oriented community, and conservationists depend on hunters to keep wild animal populations in check. Also, I live about 20 minutes from the nearest police station. If someone were to break in and seriously threaten my family and help is 20 minutes away what am I going to do? This is a fear I have for my brother and his wife who possess a firearm and are now expecting their second child; knowing just how generally careless and forgetful they are does not keep my mind at ease. I agree with you 110% I got into a semi argument with people a few weeks back or about a month ago when a two year old shot his mom inside walmart, she had a gun in her purse. I was defending her even though it was stupid to have a gun in her purse in walmart. People don't know what may have led her to carrying a gun like that. She could've been raped, had a stalker, abusive ex, exc. I think guns are necessary for safety I think and since so many people in America love to hunt. I'll never understand why hunting is so enjoyable though. My step dad does it and he sits in the freezing cold in a tree stand for ten hours at a time, what's fun about that? Each to their own hobbies though I do agree with you 110% though. As I was growing up my dad had a gun safe and had guns hidden around the house incase someone ever broke in that we could be defended depending where we were in the house. I never knew where any of them were until I was about sixteen and he took me to a shooting range to practice shooting and proper use incase someone would ever break in and I would ever need to use one, hopefully that never happens though. I do agree about guns, I think they're needed and an accident like this was just an accident that shouldn't of happened :( The gun haters will use this accident as another reason to get rid of them. I don't necessarily live near a police station either, and I feel extremely safe WITHOUT a gun around me. Plus, there are other ways to protect yourself.
