Meghan Trainor's album.

I don't really listen to her, but what does she have the do with this discussion. You said TD was critically acclaimed when is not. And the album that you don't really like, ARTPOP, has a higher score.

MetaCritic is not the end-all of professional opinion and not indicative of all critics. I'm pretty sure most people in this world would consider TD and ARTPOP to be MILES ahead of Title and the fact it's rated higher on MC invalidates its legitimacy as a respectable review source imo

Especially when it's a bunch of hipsters running it

Well, Metacritic only summarizes reviews. But how to you claim that TD is acclaimed? If you like it so much than fine. But that is not what everyone thinks.

MetaCritic summarizes reviews created by hipsters.

What about TD's sales indicates that it is not acclaimed? What about the media's perpetually positive portrayal of Katy?

We all know that popularity is not the same as quality. Katy's perception is a completely different subject.

People wouldn't have made five consecutive songs #1 and bought that many copies of the album if there was no quality in it. Popularity stems from quality and public opinion.

Not really. Katy just appeals to many people. Her music is just simple and fun. But her music is also far from being great. For example, how did Gagnam Style get so popular. Is obviously not the best song or video.

Gangnam Style got popular because it was incredible unique and found not only a niche but created a dance sensation that lasted about a year, one hit wonders don't count. We're talking people who actually sell albums. Buying an album is much different from buying a single. It takes a degree of deliberation to decide spending 10-14 times the amount of a song for a full length release, which doesn't typically happen if you like someone because they're simply popular or fun.

If quality was the most popular apect of music, then most of Katy's songs would not have reached #1. There are obviously more intricate and acclaimed music out there. Katy makes catchy songs that are easy to digest and that is why she sells so much.

Pain of fame1

Only in the US and with a re-release at that :reductive:

ARTPOP sold more than Rated R  Where are the other fanbases calling Rihanna a flop? Both sold good :applause:

Quality is subjective and I personally believe that categorizing Katy's music as "simple" and "fun" because they hold the connotation of the product they're referring to being of lesser value is ridiculous. Pop music is not easy to write, catchy pop music even less. You would understand this if you actually wrote it. Just because it isn't intricate doesn't mean it isn't good or of high quality. That's where you're wrong. It's not like every song that's intricate and amazing took longer to write or that people worked harder on it.

The mentality of people who buy music is not that it's "simple and easy to digest", it's that it sounds good and is relatable. These aren't bad things at all. Why shouldn't music sound good and be relatable? Having more open subjects rather than delving into specifics with your lyrics allows more people to relate to it and enjoy it and thus it sells.

Can we address the fact that The Fame came in at #7 even though it doesn't count the first 2 years of its sales? :legend:

The reason why people consider pop music to be bad is because most pop music and pop artists keep repeating the same things over and over. They only make simple mindless music to sell lots of records. They don't make muaic to explore new things and be creative. Katy hasn't done anything that many other popstars before her haven't done.On the other hand, Gaga and some others, take was has been done before and twist into new fresh things. Katy makes music for the moment, which is fine, but that will never lead her to be acclaimed. Also there is good and bad catchy music.
