Teenage Dream is one of the best pop albums of all time lyrically and sonically. 5 #1 hits and critical/public acclaim. It's a solid, fun, great album.

so arguable

No, no. Not getting into this again. Just don't.

I just looked back and read your arguments and completely 100% disagree with you and your point of view. I agree in that Teenage Dream has some good commercial pop songs that are catchy. But you lose credibility in saying that simply because something sells a lot that thats indicative of quality. Metacritic also does not summarize reviews written by hipsters, its an all encompassing calculator of a variety of reviews. What I WILL agree with however is that reviews in general are not the be all end all of quality calculation because ultimately reviews these days are just bias opinions of people like you and i masquerading as subjective assessments. Anyway, while Teenage Dream has some cute infectious stuff, I think overall Katy lacks an identity in the pop sphere. Shes a well packaged pop star that is consumed to the extent that she is because shes been shoved in everyones face and shes neutral enough that people don't fight it. How involved she is in her schtick is of no importance to me, I like Britney Spears and its pretty obvious that shes a producer driven artist. If Katy writes and produces her own music it doesn't matter because ultimately the end product just hasn't really brought anything to the table imo. Shes just fine and I think her music has its place on pop radio and in popular culture, but shes just not an iconic figure imo especially in comparison to her peers. Her popularity a testament to the way American culture blasts you with bull**** all day everyday to the point that youre forced to have an opinion. Because genuinely, if the radio didn't constantly play her without anyone even requesting her, I don't think she'd be in high demand naturally.

Why did you ignore my request for you to not start this and go ahead to argue anyway. I said no.

I read your opinion and it has good points and I respect it but I think Teenage Dream is great and the bias of monsters, as they so love to justify anything denouncing Katy in spite of her, is something I personally can't argue with.

I agree, there are a lot of gaga fans that denounce Katy, just as there are a lot of fans in general that denounce rival artists or whatever. Its b/s but its expected. My opinion of Katy is one i've always held even before I could say with certainty that I even liked Lady Gaga. I don't hate Katy Perry, I just have grown to find her tiresome as a consumer of pop music being blasted with her all day everyday without my consent. Ive grown to believe whole-heartedly that her success was built by high powers within the industry rather than purely on merit and catchiness alone.

Even as a songwriter that detests co-writing, I feel that it's a positive thing Katy works with people the way she does. It's successful, it works. A lot of people like it. Katy is just another pop rock star without her team and her team would be nothing without Katy, so.

Some people here and other pop forums put a lot of false importance on the artist being the sole songwriter. I think some of the best songs in history weren't even written by the singer themselves. I think great music can come from collaborations in songwriting. So to me thats not really a big deal. I care about the end product. I don't think Katy has soul in her pop music though, to me its all just marketable product. Like Britney and Rihanna but without the humor and edge from either respective artist.

Katy is good at putting genuine fun and joy into her music though, which is important. You can tell she has a great understanding of the way the songs should be conveyed, what the meaning is, etc.

I feel that only comes across with Teenage Dream the album and Hot N Cold off her first record. Teenage Dream itself is a euphoric pop song and California Girls is campy fun. But if you try and delve deeper into her music you find nothing more than bankable pre-packaged food. To me, Prism stripped us of what makes Katy Perry tolerable at least for me. Because it was filled with beige balladry and mid tempo pop numbers that dont do or say much of anything and you can't at least say she bared herself or tried to accomplish something because she didn't. It was just an album released for singles to make money and videos to get views. Teenage Dream is a good pop album, but I don't think Katy Perry is that good of a pop artist. Just imo. Because shes nothing more than her couple of catchy songs and in that case someone like Britney Spears amps up the camp and s-xuality or Rihanna amps up her searing sense of style and edge. Katy, to me, doesn't have anything else going on around her to create a full figured pop icon.

Never knew Teenage Dream sold more than Born This Way.... I'm seething

that's just the US though, the US loves Katy but the world loves Gaga (though the US actually is also very supportive of Gaga)
