teo 609 Posted January 12, 2015 Share Posted January 12, 2015 Hey, if you don't learn from history you are destined to repeat it not too long ago Yugoslavia and Russia were our allies and Japan and Germany were our enemies, then switch, all these arrangements can change in just a couple decades! If you know history then you should know that Germany might have started the WW2, but it wasn't their fault entirely. The whole Europe is kind of responsible for it and you can see why if you check how the first one ended and compare it to the second. Now I'm not in any way making excuses for Hitler's atrocities just to be clear. But Europe learned it's lesson. Russia too even with all their craziness and delusions they never really had a big war after that. If his time of reign Gorbachev had a chance to sign a thoughtful and wise deal with the NATO secretary, in which the Soviet Union would agree on the Eastern and Western Germany reunion in exchange for an agreement of NATO not expanding in the Eastern Europe. I suppose that would've founded a more peaceful landscape for the European security policy, involving stronger communication between Russia and EU. One thing NATO has to realize is that Russian government and military commanders will always see NATO as a major threat to Russian security, until the time the change in generations takes place. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO has expanded to the Eastern Europe, coming directly to Russian borders in some places. Russia has not been seen planning to open its military bases in Mexico or any other places close to the USA borders. Russia will always react to NATO desire to include Ukraine, Georgia and Moldavia into the permanent NATO members in an agressive way. Because theoretically, if NATO manages to place missile defense systems which would make Russian strategic nuclear weapons useless, then Russia's nuclear power will decrease drastically and Russia may become defensless. Russia, on the contrary, can't place missile defense systems which would disarm the NATO nuclear potential, as there are too many countries in NATO. Right now the situation is looking scary. Firstly, there are many places near Europe where the continuing conflicts allow many radical extremist organizations to train their members. The NATO operation in Libya has resulted in the disastrous consequences, turning the country in the battlefield for islamist groups and weakened government forces. Not to mention Syria, where because of the desire to dethrone Bashar Assad, the USA and allies have armed the rebel forces which have switched sides and now are playing in favor of the newly formed ISIS Secondly, there is an ongoing conflict in Ukraine involving an estimated 60,000 people. It is important to note that large part of the pro-government forces are not subordinant to the Military Chiefs or even the President there, as they are the military divisions of the far-right political forces. So there are about 40,000 armed and well-trained people there, icluding both, separatists and pro-government soldiers, who do not obey to anybody but themselves. That's why it seems there is a clear need for coopeartion. Maybe the time has come to settle a unique safety institution in Europe wich will involve both, EU and Russia. There could be mechanisms in the instituion which would prevent Russia from any sort of military agression against its smaller neighbour countries, and include severe economical and political punishment for breaking the rules of the instituion. However, seems like Russia would only agree to such terms in case NATO guarantees that Ukraine, Georgia and Moldavia will never make it to The North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
