It was the 88-year-old Bennett and his far younger kindred spirit, Lady Gaga, who held a sold-out crowd rapt at the Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Tuesday night. It was the first of two shows ushering in the New Year at the Cosmopolitan, and though it evoked nostalgia, it was not a true nostalgia act. The presence of Gaga, currently one of pop music’s hottest properties, gave the night a contemporary flair. Her eight costume changes  I believe that count is right  kept the show visually dazzling. So did the crystal-encrusted curtain, hanging high above the stage.

Formally suited fans and moderately-dressed "little monsters" (relative to Gaga's other arena jaunts) sat side-by-side for a decadent 95-minute set, featuring a whopping 28 songs with a 22-person band amidst curtains of dripping jewels (similar to the hotel's three-story bar, The Chandelier).

Yes, you wish these two had thought of all this a couple of years ago and made it a tradition to last at least a few more New Year’s. But maybe some things are only meant to happen once.

But who knows? As the Lady said, again in reference to the master and mentor onstage, “Life is all about how you keep going.â€

Gaga’s rich singing voice shined in a way it never quite did as a pop star. But with the focus on classic standards (“Anything Goes,†“Cheek to Cheek,†“The Lady Is a Trampâ€) and Bennett solos (“Smile,†“I Left My Heart in San Franciscoâ€), it was firmly Bennett’s show. When Gaga did solo (“Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,†“Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbyeâ€), it was an effort to re-create that perennially lost golden age of yore. This was great for a night that was as much about reliving Old Vegas glamour, but the evening would’ve been improved by a jazzy rearrangement of Gaga’s own “Poker Face†or “Born This Way.†While it was cool to see Gaga go old school, it would’ve been ever cooler to see Bennett go new. Beyond that one missed opportunity, it was an enchanting evening of American classics with that rich big-band sound. And perhaps, “The Best Is Yet to Come.â€

Suddenly, she’s no longer the risque pop singer who pushes the boundaries for headline-grabbing sake, but the approachable talented young artist (she’s 28) who can stand alongside the best of them  and actually sound as they do in their songs when they perform live, something many pop artists struggle to do.

Cheek to Cheek Live was amazing, the musicianship of the orchestra was spectacular, Gaga's vocals were amazing, and for an 88 year old, I really thought that Tony's solos were phenomenal
