Economy 52,861 Posted December 23, 2014 Share Posted December 23, 2014 http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2014/12/22/391381/saudi-arabia-seeks-a-dependent-us/ The Saudis who are no big fans of the Russians themselves claim that they single handedly have had more impact on Russia than all the Western Sanctions from every Country involved combined When oil prices began to collapse most OPEC members wanted to cut production but Saudi Arabia who is OPECs most influential member firmly fought to keep the production quota of 30 million barrels a day because if they cut production that would only speed up oil booms outside OPEC and they would only loose market share. Oil tumbled even more after there was no cut because of panic and now low oil prices will cost the Russian Economy at least $100 Billion a year if not more Western Sanctions on the other hand with all the Countries combined is estimated it will have a $40 Billion cost to their economy. Thats less than half the impact Saudi Arabia single handedly had caused Russia even tho Saudi Arabia didnt cause low oil prices specifically because of Russia but mainly to defend market share of oil market Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yeah cuz higher prices will speed up boom in US, Canada and Brazil and prices will come down again and OPEC would be left producing less for no reason So they wanna defend market share Now y'all know the U.S was involved. So it was partly Saudi Arabia yes. The sanctions were only meant to disrupt Russia's ability to tap into Western financial markets once the oil prices took a toll on their economy and they have to turn elsewhere to alleviate that problem. This is the same thing that happened in the Cold War. The US and Saudi Arabia and others conspired against Russia and slashed oil prices to hurt them. Nothing new. The world works in cycles. Saudi Arabia relies pretty well on the US. If they want to keep that and stay on its good side, they'll do what the US wants. Sorry but it's just a matter of fact. Until the US isn't the most powerful country many others will look up to it and listen to it, if not cause they want to then to stay on its good side and remain its ally, or out of intimidation, fear or some other thing. Just because the US has the largest economy and military doesnt mean every Country is just gonna do what the US tells them to. Its not as if the US was gonna bomb the crap out of saudi arabia if they chose not to And Saudi Arabia isnt even that dependant on the US exept for some oil exports, which on top of that because of increase imports from Canada & Mexico plus the increased US production, its not even as major as it once was And even if it was... comodities (like oil) get sold. If you loose a customer all u have to do is sell at discount temporarily to gain new customers and problem solved. I think your over-estimating US influence on Saudi Arabia Again, Saudi Arabia wanted to protect its market share amid the global glut and they did so by cutting prices on their oil exports. They didnt wanna cut production at the same time that theres energy booms going on outside OPEC... To do so would result in higher prices to support other booms and they would just loose market share Secondly, Iran and Russia are under pressure from this and Saudi Arabia already doesnt like Russia and Iran So Saudi Arabia was bound to do this regardless of outside pressure or not.
