craig 680
What do you have to gain by believe this quote occurred? Why are you acting irrationally? Why is it so important for you to deny it? Do you know what "agnostic" means? If she was a pleasant reasonable person, who cares about some alleged crap she said. But if the the alleged crap seems in character based on other, more current stuff ... Like Eminen in 2010. You don't suppose actually being in hip-hop, he might have some reason for his view beyond one ancient quote? And your original comment of calling her a "black bigot" makes me feel like it's racially motivated. The "black" is because some people, including Lauryn, seem to think only whites can be bigots and racists. She herself speaks of "reverse racism" as if that is somehow special and different. TimisaMonster 31,073
Does she think she deserves.....a....GRAMMY?????? You're gonna have to do A LOT betta than a sampled remix of an old song that was already someone else's bop Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify! DrewStevens 5,249
There are three things to point out here. 1. It is a race issue for sure. The Grammys are not fair most of the time. 2. The article has good points but it has some false statements. Anyway the main point is understandable. 3. Nicki has been part of these issues too. She washed up her true style for Roman Reloaded to appeal more white people. One thing I like about Azealia Banks is that she doesn't mutilate her style to appeal anyone. Nicki in other hand have failed to appeal the GP with stuff like Pills N Potions so she has to sell herself with stuff like Anaconda and Starships. So I don't know why she is acting like if she really cared about this. She is complaining about her lack of Grammy awards or complaining about Iggy Azalea being nominated. LStephens11 15
Does music like Anaconda really deserve Grammys though? I think her music can be fun and all, but does it really present something substantial enough to be considered the best of 2014? I do agree however, that the Grammys do sometimes snub black artists, and I think it's good that Nicki is adding to that conversation.

The "black" is because some people, including Lauryn, seem to think only whites can be bigots and racists. She herself speaks of "reverse racism" as if that is somehow special and different. 1. That interview with Eminem is from 1999. (Why do I keep having to correct you?) 2. You'd think if you could find an interview with Eminem referencing it, you could find the actual interview where it occurred. Alas, it doesn't exist. 3.. Lauryn Hill has basically been out of the industry for almost 15 years. Current people would know less than anyone. 4. Every quote of hers that has been brought up in this thread has been very well-rounded and inclusive of white people. Nothing you've brought up in this thread actually is exclusionary towards white people. 5. If you actually read her article, you'd understand that her argument is actually much more nuanced than that and much more intellectual. But once again, you posted without reading and you didn't even see how impressive her argument was. But you'd much rather just write her off as a black bigot, right? Her point was that racism existed as a way for white people to exert superiority over other races for centuries. Racism came from whites feeling like they had the authority to enslave, sell, beat, etc. people of color because they were lesser beings. Prejudice and hatred towards white people now from people of color is a reaction to the centuries of mistreatment at the hands of white people. By calling it reverse racism, that's implying that the prejudice and hatred is coming from feelings of superiority rather than as a reaction. She says that the only way reverse racism could be proven to actually be true reverse racism is if the slate was wiped clean and we could sit a person of color down and see if he/she truly feels superior to white people. For a crude and not to scale a--logy, let's say we have a murderer who kills someone's mom. Later, the son kills the murderer. Is the son a murderer in the same way the original murderer was? You can't say yes, because you don't know if the son would have killed had his mother not been murdered. His crime was only a reaction. To use the same terminology to describe both crimes doesn't do it justice. And you're gonna try and boil it down to her saying "only whites can be bigots and racists". ****. That's not what she's saying at all. From her post, that's not what she even believes. Come on. Read your own damn sources before you post.
jsn 1,644
It bothers me that every time a person of color speaks up about observing something suspicious that may in fact be racist/prejudiced, white people have to start screaming "not every thing is about race omg stop playing the race card!!!!!" it's like to them racism doesn't exist or something and they'll make up every excuse imaginable to say it's not racist and then try to silence the people who the problem may be hurting and lol @ the people that didn't even read the article trying to comment on Nicki "not deserving" a grammy when in fact that has nothing to do with the point at all

One time I made a post about someone saying Gwen Stefani was racist and a whole bunch of Gwen stans jumped and said "everything is racist these days" and all that nonsense. As if something isn't racist just because several white men decided it wasn't.

It's more like "my grandparents were harmed by group X," now I bear ill will for group X who may not even be descendants of the murderer. Most current group dislike IS reactive. Somebody hates Muslims because of 9/11. The Muslim can say that was a reaction to something Euro-Americans did. The Serbian can say their ill will for Muslims goes back to the Turkish conquest in 1389. The black kid encountered a nasty white cop. The white kid was mugged by a black thug. So we have millionaire Lauryn invoking slavery when sentenced for tax evasion. Not good taste. The judge ordered she undergo counselling for her conspiracy theories. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/lauryn-hill-tax-trial-465175

SEANGT 4,905
That's an interesting idea, except that's not the context I meant what I said in. I'm questioning the quality of her lyrics, not her race. I know. I'm trying to express something about perspective and what good or quality music even means. craig 680
so. much. ignorance. Lauryn was born in the 70's. Well after segregation, let along slavery. To prosperous parents, in a world with affirmative action and political correctness. Maybe if her society wasn't so ready to indulge victim crap, she'd have a better outlook and make more of her talent. That's the tragedy - she had it all in the late 90's, the powers that be in music were celebrating her. But her own attitude (and possible mental health issues) was her undoing.
