inuborg 4,135
Ugh it's so embarrassing to always have people of my race claiming racism every time **** don't go their way. But lets be honest if TNC or any of its singles were made by a black women, no one would have cared. I root for you. I love you. You, you, you, you.
Benji 20,113
why is this most discussed? why are white guys writing paragraphs about whether or not this is an issue? IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH US. no. shut up. you do not get to argue this. it's about liberation of POC from white supremacy. ugh you need to realise there are some places where white male voices are not appropriate. get over yourself. Your view is very counter productive. I don't know if you're aware of history but every fight for equality only picks up real steam in bringing change when those who are part of the oppression begin to fight for change too. If it wasn't for men wanting women to get the vote, women would not have got the vote. If it wasn't for the whites wanting more equality for the blacks, the blacks would not be viewed as equal as they are today. I'm going to assume you're a white, gay, male? If it wasn't for straight people accepting and then helping us fight for more rights, we would have not got as far as we have today. We don't sign off homophobia as "gay problems" ... we expect the world to know better now.
Tropico 4,145
But lets be honest if TNC or any of its singles were made by a black women, no one would have cared. Maybe true. Very well could've been looked at as "Oh another black female rapper. Next?" But my point is that not everything that happens is based off race. Sometimes it's just the way things are and it'd be a lot classier if everyone didn't scream "RACIST" every 5 seconds. ♢ Social Justice Enthusiast ♢
craig 680
you're trying so hard and i'm uncomfortable and embarrassed for you what does it feel like to be racist? one racist quote didn't stick so now you're trying to find something else to throw at her? seems like being racist is a lot of work :sweep: The quote was widely believed because it wasn't out of character, she said a lot of inflammatory and problematic things. When a person can't even make a factual, reasonable argument without being shouted down as racist, it kind of undercuts the idea that white society is horribly biased, doesn't it? (Or at least the non-Fox News watching non-geriatric segment of it that is relevant to pop culture and music awards.)
Willy Wonka 4
The quote was widely believed because it wasn't out of character, she said a lot of inflammatory and problematic things. When a person can't even make a factual, reasonable argument without being shouted down, it kind of undercuts the idea that white society is horribly biased, doesn't it? It was widely believed because Howard Stern circulated it when he was at his peak of influence. Reasonable? You called someone a black bigot based on a fake quote (you're calling that factual too?), then when you got called out on that, you tried to throw something else at her. It's transparent and sad. And I'm not even going to begin with you trying to imply that GGD is representative of white society So just to clarify, she shouldn't have won AOTY of the year because of a fake quote and the fact that she was charged with evading taxes 13 years later? That's your reasonable and factual argument? Okay.

My point if that is someone as political and messy as Lauryn can win over Madonna and Shania, it suggests the committee isn't biased against blacks. Willy Wonka 4
I'm agnostic about whether the quote if true. My point if that is someone as political and messy as Lauryn can win over Madonna and Shania, it suggests the committee isn't biased against blacks. I don't even know how to start with this post. 1. When all sources point one way, and you still argue the other, you no longer care about the truth and you only care about advancing your agenda. You want her to be the angry, scary, messy, radical, white-hating black girl that she isn't so that your racist feelings towards her are justified. They aren't. All sources say the quote was falsified. If you still believe it wasn't, it's because you have something to gain by it being true. 2. At this time, Lauryn Hill was beloved and respected by media and the public. She broke first-week debut records for women with this album. Calling her "messy" and "political" goes to show how little you know about her career and about her at this time. You're projecting what you want her to have been. That's not reality. 3. To pretend like Madonna wasn't "messy" or "political", when this was the first album cycle after Erotica and the Sex book? Now you're just rewriting history. You're blatantly racist. craig 680
But my point is that not everything that happens is based off race. Sometimes it's just the way things are and it'd be a lot classier if everyone didn't scream "RACIST" every 5 seconds. The black posters here are quite classy - it's certain whites (obsessed with showing how non-racist they are?) who heat up the rhetoric. Nicki is cool too. She stands up for herself and her opinions without being an annoying SJW about it. ORRRRR, *shocker*, she had a better album than those two. Subjectively, I'm Team Shania. Objectively, it's like voting between an apple, orange, and banana for Fruit of the Year. Different years different types of fruits are honoured, that the way it goes. Part of the reason that I don't engage in these discussions online is that they almost always devolve into name-calling and rude remarks which is completely counter-productive. Writing off something as SJW dribble is easy. It allows you to shrug off any responsibility for what you say.
