HIM is a Finnish rock band from Helsinki. Formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström, and bassist Mikko "Migé" Paananen, HIM's current lineup consists of Valo, Linde, Migé, and Janne "Emerson Burton" Puurtinen on keyboards. Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger – drums (2015–present). They have released eight studio albums to date; their latest, titled Tears on Tape, was released April 26, 2013. On September 5, 2006, HIM's fifth studio album Dark Light was certified gold by the RIAA, making HIM the first Finnish band to have a gold album in the United States. HIM had five of their studio albums certified platinum in Finland with Razorblade Romance being certified double platinum in Finland and platinum in Germany.

HIM's genre is debated in some circles; on their album Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights, it says their genre is "alternative", but their musical style is also often referred to as "love metal" by Valo and by the group's fans. Valo has stated that the band started as a "Black Sabbath tribute band of sorts". Some of Valo's biggest influences include The Doors, The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Iron Maiden and Depeche Mode.

 

Critics have referred to them as gothic rock, gothic metal, alternative rock, alternative metal,dark rock, and melodic heavy metal.

 

In addition to "love metal", other self-described terms applied to the band by its members as well as journalists include "Goth 'n roll" and "Scandinavian blues".

The heartagram is the trademarked symbol of HIM, created by Ville Valo on his twentieth birthday. Valo has stated that the heartagram is a "Modern Yin Yang", and is meant to represent the juxtaposition of 'good and evil', 'light and dark', and 'love and death'.

HIM have used the heartagram on the cover of their albums Love Metal, Dark Light,Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, XX – Two Decades of Love Metal and Tears on Tape. Valo has said that "the heartagram stands for HIM as a band, as an entity, and for 'love metal' in general."[65] Many fans of the band have heartagram tattoos, or tattoos of other HIM emblems — such as the single heart on Valo's right wrist, and a number of fan-submitted photos of same decorated the lyric booklet for the limited edition of Dark Light.

Ville Valo has allowed his close friend, Jackass star, actor, and professional skateboarder Bam Margera to use the heartagram image and Margera has accordingly used it for his promotional purposes, including using it on his Adio shoes andElement skateboards. Because of this usage, the symbol is often thought to belong solely to Margera. However, Valo stated in a 2014 LoudWire interview that there are no licensing rights on the Heartagram; however, it is trademarked. Valo stated, "It's trademarked, but if somebody wants to get a tattoo or make a t-shirt of [the heartagram] that's okay, but if somebody is selling t-shirts and making money out of it, that's infringement." He continued to say, "the Heartagram might be the best thing I've ever come up with."[5] Other well-known individuals have also received a tattoo of the logo such as Kat Von D and Kelly Osbourne. According to Valo, the band have become better known for their logo than their music.

A heartagram appears at the end of the music video for the song "DARE" by the band Gorillaz, where Murdoc wakes up, on the wall to the left hand side. It was also parodied, as the "horseagram"—a combination of a horse shoe and a pentagram—in the episode "Ode to Sue" of the video game comedy troupe Mega64. During the filming of Jackass Number Two, cast member Steve-O got a parody tattoo of a heartagram called a "Dickagram", where the lowest point of the inverted pentagram is shaped like a penis.[66] The heartagram was also shown in a couple of episodes in Season 8 of The WB's Charmed as a demonic symbol[67] and in an episode of Criminal Minds as a heartagram necklace.[68]

Dark Light was the first Finnish album to sell gold in the United States, meaning it has sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., and 1,500,000 copies worldwide. The album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200.[4]It was rated #9 in Metal Hammer's albums of the decade.

Venus Doom is the sixth studio album by Finnish band, HIM, released on 14 September 2007.

On 26 September, the album debuted at #12 in the U.S., with 38,000 copies sold. This is a record for a Finnish act. It made #31 in the UK.[10] In Finland, Venus Doom peaked at #2, and in Germany it debuted at #3. As of November 2011, it has sold more than 1,000,000 copies worldwide.

Oh I didn't know this. Thanks for posting! It's amazing how he can go from heavy metal to Chris Isaak tunes, his voice is so interesting and I think he never had singing lessons! Only if he would drop cigarettes, but I guess giving up alcohol was already big sacrifice.
