Scottish Trade Union Body Warns of Job Losses Over EU-US Trade Deal

MOSCOW, December 4 (Sputnik)  More than a million people all over the European Union have signed a petition urging the EU to stop negotiations with the United States on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and not ratify the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada.

As of 09:00 GMT, 1,002, 472 people have signed the Stop TTIP and CETA petition, according to the campaign's website.

"We want to prevent TTIP and CETA because they include several critical issues such as investor-state dispute settlement and rules on regulatory cooperation that pose a threat to democracy and the rule of law. We want to prevent lowering of standards concerning employment, social, environmental, privacy and consumers and the deregulation of public services (such as water) and cultural assets from being deregulated in non-transparent negotiations," the petition says.

EU, US Leaders Reaffirm Negotiations on Trade Agreement: EU Commission

The EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) are controversial initiatives aimed at deregulating markets between the EU and the US and between the EU and Canada, respectively, to ease the flow of goods and services across the Atlantic. CETA was signed in September and is currently pending approval by the European Parliament, while the TTIP, negotiated in January, is still under debate.

The Stop TTIP petition was founded by the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), an alliance of some 300 European organizations.

According to the campaign website, the petition must collect a minimum of one million of signatures within a year "to be successful." That success is defined by the campaign as forcing a legal condition on the European Commission to provide a formal response explaining why it is accepting or rejecting the TTIP.

In September, however, the European Commission refused ECI"s request to register Stop TTIP, stating that the petition does not qualify for such a reply. The ECI have launched a legal challenge to this decision.

why would you sign this? better relations with the US is good. Dont know why this would be seen as a threat.

And the source is Russian. Obviously anti-EU source.

I read the link and it says this will only benefit big corporations and lower standards. (Who is surprised?)

Fracking is questionable so you should not allow it in Europe tbh. Also jobs and the other things shouldn't be threatened. Sounds like EU just being lured by big corporations.

Are people against the Canada trade too? Because I see it's up for ratification.

Economy

U never wanna deregulate water or privatize it...

If my Province (Ontario) privatized water, my family of 6 ppl that use a tone of water between long showers, landry loads, watering lawn (in summer) would not be paying a mere $30-$40 a month!!!

Electricity and water is a bad idea to privatize cause their profit margins is what will squeeze not only households but other businesses too slowing economic growth

Im a great believer in deregulation, and low taxes and encouraging business investment and letting the private sector do their job of creating jobs and economic growth to generate wealth

However there are some exeptions of things the Government should run such as water and electricity. Theres also economic advantages to free healthcare although it would take a while to explain

Europeans hate Canadas oil industry sayin its destructive

I got news for you... Most new oil developments isnt in liquid oil. Thats already peaked...

2/3 of the worlds reserves that became unlocked due to new technologies now exist in unconventional oil reserves such as oil sands or shale oil

So what u gonna do? Sanction or cut trade with every Country experiencing an energy boom with these new unconventional reserves? Im sorry but thats lame and stupid

The best way to fight the industry while simultaneously not killing the economy is by encouraging green development and eliminating the need for fossil fuels at the source to begin with

Some environmentalists instead focus their energy on trying to stop each individual projects (like pipelines) and stuff. Its dumb cause its not truly effective and it puts economic pressure and political gridlock and dysfunction
