UN Resolution: Israel Must Renounce Nuclear Arms

The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved an Arab-backed resolution Tuesday calling on Israel to renounce possession of nuclear weapons and put its nuclear facilities under international oversight.

The resolution, adopted in a 161-5 vote, noted that Israel is the only Middle Eastern country that is not party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. It called on Israel to "accede to that treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons, to renounce possession of nuclear weapons" and put its nuclear facilities under the safeguard of the

U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency.

The United States, Canada, Palau and Micronesia joined Israel in opposing the measure, while 18 countries abstained.

Israel is widely considered to possess nuclear arms but declines to confirm it.

The resolution, introduced by Egypt, echoed a similar Arab-backed effort that failed to gain approval in September at the Vienna-based IAEA. At the time, Israel criticized Arab countries for undermining dialogue by repeatedly singling out the Jewish state in international arenas. Israel's U.N. Mission did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday.

The U.N. resolution, titled "The risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East," pushed for the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East and lamented that U.S.-backed efforts to convene talks were abandoned in 2012.

Israel has long argued that a full Palestinian-Israeli peace plan must precede any creation of a Mideast zone free of weapons of mass destruction. The country also argues that Iran's alleged work on nuclear arms is the real regional threat. Iran denies pursuing such weapons.

General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding but carry moral weight because it is the only body where all 193 U.N. member states are represented.

U.S. representative Robert Wood, in voting against the resolution at the committee-level last month, said the measure "fails to meet the fundamental tests of fairness and balance. It confines itself to expressions of concern about the activities of a single country."

Wood said the U.S. will continue pushing a Middle East free of weapons of mass destructions, but he warned that such resolutions only undermine prospects for progress.

But doesn't America have nuclear weapons? Why should Israel give theirs up if America isn't willing to do the same? Is it coz the Middle East is just a flaming unpredictable mess right now or…?

Nuclear arms are mess in general. No one is allowed to have them.

Five countries in the world; the USA, China, Russia, France and the UK are legally allowed to have them

Who decides if it's legally or not? Nuclear arms should be illegal to everyone

The treaty on the non-profileration of nuclear weapons, which is signed by almost every country showing they agree to the terms; Israel, Pakistan and North Korea are the main countries that aren't on the list.

Edit: changed name of treaty

the question is what countries were forced to sign that? :lolgaga:

Anyway I'm still in the opinion that no one should have nuclear arms.

In my opinion, the current states legally holding nuclear weapons should continue to do so under a policy of detterence and the idea of mutually assured destruction; if rogue states like North Korea and Israel continue on a policy of illegally obtaining nuclear weapons, they could easily use them had there not been some other state with equal capability to use them, which I think would be the basis of the treaty (idk much about it though) alongside the cold war playing a part in it  I obviously disagree with the actual use of nuclear weapons though too

No, weapons are bad. There will be people who will humiliate those rules. Nuclear arms need to be destroyed to make peace.

We Jews learnd we should trust no b---h. :deadbanana:

We're not even a "rough" state. The Americans are aware of what happens in Dimona, The French took part of building it and the Germans provide us with nuclear submarines. :emma: It's like the world knows about it for decades and it seems to bother only Arab states.

i used to hate nuclear weapons but now days i'm starting to think maybe the threat of nuclear war is the only thing that has kept the big military powers of the world in check and avoiding another world war because everyone is so damn afraid of nukes. and i'm not talking about the government here i'm talking about the people in the countries fearing nuclear war so much that once a powerful nation starts some **** the people living there will shut **** down with protests and possibly revolution because everyone knows what nukes will do to the world. but there is always an example like north korea where the people are possibly so brainwashed that they might support a nuclear attack and end up ****ing everything up.

i'm just glad that nukes seem to be in the hands of countries that have been able to maintain their sanity but could a government convince one of those countries over time that suicide(basically) is the popular course of action?.......or maybe their the government and wont even ask for any kind of approval and just launch **** secretly.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

That's the point mutually assured destruction, if someone was to use nuclear weapons, another state/the opposite faction (depending on whether you look at it in a cold war context) could easily retaliate leading to the destruction of both places, which nobody would want to occur
