Boys would not be expected to wear a suit to an event of this nature. They would probably be in jeans and a plaid or solid color long sleeve shirt, possibly a pair of khaki pants. Why would they wear a suit to this casual event?

Obama is wearing a suit! :duck:

Whispering

Obama is the President. His children are not adults, nor are they elected officials. They are dressed in a completely appropriate manner for this fun and casual ceremony.

I disagree. That outfit on the left is beyond the beyonds. They should be dressed more like these photos of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his family. The bottom photo is "casual" - no ties.

ATRL's "Fruity" spills the tea:

"Given the FORMALITY of the occasion, and the expectations of the first family, Sasha is dressed inappropriately. Lets be honest. The dress is way too short, by a LONG way it is an inappropriate length, I mean her cardigan is longer. Her boots and socks look ridiculous for the context... Its not racy and the club comment is ridiculous but you get what she is saying - this is not the time for contemporary teen fashion. And Malia's jumper is not exactly formally appropriate either.

What I'm saying is if either of them turned up to a professional interview dressed like this, they would be ruled out within 2 seconds of introducing themselves. Not critisizing the kids themselves, they are young, but you would think the white house staff or whatever would have done better."

what i think is inappropriate is seeing two young girls of color being called low class and subjected to scrutiny over completely innocent outfits. why is the subject matter of their clothing a topic of discussion period?? and for all things, i just read this is for a turkey pardoning, like why is this even being discussed right now??? we have young back kids dying innocently in the streets in this country for crying out loud!

If these were sons, they would have to wear some decent suit, tie and leather shoes, just something basic, maybe Brooks Brothers. These days it's no longer fashionable to wear men's hats so they could skip that.

I don't know the female equivalent but you get the picture. If they wore this in the 1960s people would be SHOCKED!

You are right, a person from the 1960's would be SHOCKED to learn that the First Family was wearing casual clothing to press events. A person from the 1960's would probably be more SHOCKED to learn the President is a "negro."

I'm not sure why you are using the 1960's as a barometer for what is socially appropriate. In the 60's Lyndon B. Johnson used to unzip his pants and show his genitals to reporters, asking if they had ever seen a penis so large. Arguably Sasha's 2014 sock/boot combo is less offensive.

They were not meeting the Pope, they were standing next to their Father while he pardoned a pair of birds named MAC and CHEESE. It's a goofy, silly, weird, little meaningless event. They were dressed appropriately.

What is that hoe gonna do? Call the police and have two black teenagers shot because they gave a stank face? The more I think of it, the more plausible it is in America

Gurl shut up! That's really not funny one bit.

And Paula Abdul ain’t got [BLEEP] on me!
