Arabic will be scrapped as the official second language and Jewish citizens will have extra rights, breaking essential principles in Israel's original independence declaration. The proposal caused controversy in Israel's political sphere. The law still needs approval from Israel's parliament before it can be effective. Prime minister Netanyahu says this new law is crucial because the idea that Israel is a Jewish nation is getting lost. He criticizes the popular view in which Palestinians should have their own state, while simultaneously opposing a Jewish state. The proposal is seen as a response to the violent tensions between Israel and Palestine of the last year. The Israeli government vowed to respond to the wave of violence with harsh new measures, including a proposal to strip Palestinian attackers of their residency rights. Israel has already resumed a controversial policy of demolishing Palestinian attackers' homes. In this law proposal the Jewish personality of Israel will be officially acknowledged. One passages refers to typical Jewish laws as an "inspiration for the legislation". The most shocking result will be the removal of Arabic as the official second language, a language 20% of Israel's population, Arabic muslims, currently speaks. Netanyahu also confirms that Israeli Jews will have more rights than other citizens on top of general citizen rights, which will not be changed. The changes involve for example a new flag and a very own national anthem. "Every Jew in the world will have the right to move to Israel freely," Netanyahu stressed. A lot of opposition and criticism arises from the opposition, but even the majority seems scattered in opinion. The proposal was not unanimously approved by Netanyahu's administration: 14 votes against 7. Two political parties in the center of Israel's political spectrum stress that Netanyahu wants to quickly settle this law before the pre-elections of his own party occur. The criticism arises predominantly from the fact that the new regulations would be a complete ignoring of the indepence declaration of Israel. In this declaration it is clearly written that the nation is "built on the principles of freedom and justice as expressed by the prophets" and that "full social and political equality is granted for every citizen, no matter what religion, race or gender". What's fascinating is that you don't even need to believe in God to be a Jew. Actually atheism is rising in Jewish circles. But you can and must prove your Jewish identity politically in Israel and it's not an easy project. In most Jewish circles, it's "only" necessary to be born out of a Jewish mother (this is why Jewish people can be called a race, even though it's doubtful that the lineage really goes back to ancient times) but in Israel you have to convince the Israeli rabbinate of your Jewish identity with official papers and genealogy information. The arabic language will remain official for example.. In any case, this law is stupid, and Netanyahu is playing with fire now, because even the Druze who gives 100% support to Israel, serving at the military and everything, will have less rights. And many mixed couples (Jew + other religion) will have less right because one of the partners is not a jew. This law is really ****ing up my relationship, because we can't come back to Israel even if we marry, my bf will get a working visa only after 2 years, will have a tourists right, and we don't see any future there as a couple, and it's sad..
