Venice bans wheeled suitcases for tourists (Locals exempt)

Here’s bad news for visitors to Venice, and good news for entrepreneurs and chiropractors: roller suitcases are soon to be illegal in the Italian city.

The Venice City Council has announced that beginning May 2015, any tourist seen using a bag with hard wheels will be subject to a fine of 500 Euros (about $620), in the name of decreasing noise pollution for locals and wear and tear to the old city’s delicate streets and bridges.

So anyone unable to shlep their bags over their backs to their hotel, or carry them with the handles like people did in the 70s, is going to need some help – many parts of Venice aren’t accessible to cars.

And the real kicker, according to the local newspaper that reported this? Locals are exempt from the law.

The City Council’s solution to the ban is that it’s OK to use bags with inflatable tires – too bad no such bag exists yet.

According to the local Il Gazzettino newspaper, city officials say the ban will be a relief for local residents and shopkeepers who were suffering “serious discomfort†from the daily cacophony of bag wheels. They also noted “progressive deterioration†of the city’s fragile infrastructure.

We couldn’t find a similar ban in any other city, but Venice does have a unique conflict in balancing tourism with preservation – the city gets over 20 million visitors a year, and with its cobblestone streets and rising water levels, it’s delicate. Venice already moved to ban large cruise ships from its lagoon this year for environmental reasons.

I could maybe understand this if the ban was for everyone, but the fact that locals are exempt from the law makes absolutely no sense to me Either ban it outright or don't ban it at all

OMG glad I went there before the ban

since there were no cars and getting a water taxi is too expensive

we had to walk 30 min at 5am in the morning with our roller suitcases (we crossed 7 bridges where we had to life our suitcases up)

 

and Venice is hot like wet sweaty hot because of the water (it was already warm at 5am) during summer, our clothes stick to our body

No tourists will want to find themselves carrying their own big heavy luggage.

Aka they will see lesser tourists in the coming years.

Besides, more than anything,

Venice need to clean their ca--ls more often, and never let houses to directly dump human waste directly into the ca--ls anymore, aka do something better than open sewage sytem,

green water with fetid smell isn't very picturesque, is it?

I just laughed over few tourists that swim in there over one Summer of 2003 and not knowing much.

20 million tourists visit Venice every year. At the same time, the city has a population of 270,000. And since locals aren't traveling often, most wouldnt use rolling suitcases.

I can't stand seeing slovenly people roll their bags around, the wheels of their bloated bags creaking under the weight of the offensively ugly clothing stuffed inside. Bags chock-full of desperately shallow mementoes that give meaning to their lives. Please people, pack what you need and only what you need…and put the things you need in something other then a hideous rolling vinyl sack. If I see another Toyota Carola I'm going to hang myself. Beauty is dead.

Damn that's what you call a tourist killer. SMH at the banning the actual suitcases and not just the act of rolling them on the ground. What suitcase does NOT have wheels nowadays? People sure as hell won't be buying new suitcases just for traveling to Venice, I'd rather go somewhere else

 

EDIT: what came to mind right now was: what about physically disabled tourists? are they supposed to carry their suitcases as well?
