juicyjuicy 1,181
It's a business strategy so that more people will actually buy her freakin' overrated music because they can't find/stream it online like they usually do. I mean honey, you already sold 1.3M in your debut week - that's the highest amount of sales for any album this year. What more do you want?!
Mills 446
Taylor Swift and the Myth of the Mean Greedy Artist: http://electricliterature.com/taylor-swift-and-the-myth-of-the-mean-greedy-artist/ Great read! Thanks for sharing. And I agree with this article on this issue, particularly this paragraph: None of this is to say that artists shouldn’t give their work away for free. Free stuff is great! Streaming is great! Self-publishing, ebooks, and the rest are all great. The point is that it should be up to the artist. If one author wants to put up all their work for free online and another wants to charge ten dollars, those should be their decisions. If you don’t think that a book is worth ten dollars, then don’t buy it. The artist is not “mean†or “greedy†or “evil†for wanting money, and you have near infinite other options to spend your time on. The current climate is one where artists need to experiment with different ways of making and selling work, but that means letting them try different thingsâ€â€not demanding that they do exactly what you want them to do. The fact alone that we can still listen to Taylor Swift's music on a site like YouTube and VEVO for free invalidates the argument that TS and her team are being "greedy" with their decision to pull out from Spotify. If they are, music streaming online, excluding illegal sites, should've long been gone. But that's clearly not the case. Her music IS still there for people to stream without actually purchasing the music created by the artists (singers, songwriters, music producers, arrangers), financed, distributed and marketed by the labels and the rest of the corporate music industry. Some fail to realise, or blatantly try to ignore, that mainstream music is business. Business is about earning. The attitude that "just because someone has earned so much, they shouldn't earn more" is not only unfairly unrealistic, but also grossly ill-considered. We've to keep in mind that the labels are NOT really forcing you to give your money. The decision to buy music solely belongs to the consumers. And no one else. Now, does that make us "greedy" then, for having the right to say which music we would buy? Of course not. Same goes to these people who've spent time, money, and effort in coming up with their own product. And yes, these people include musicians.

giskardsb 12,565
Some fail to realise, or blatantly try to ignore, that mainstream music is business. Business is about earning. The attitude that "just because someone has earned so much, they shouldn't earn more" is not only unfairly unrealistic, but also grossly ill-considered. Pop fans also skew their opinion based on the few mega-pop stars. The fact is that for every Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga that can actually make money selling albums, the vast majority of bands can no longer earn a living because of downloading and streaming. The industry is getting skewed even more than it has been towards those who can generate hits and replicate hit making formulas, and thousands of worthwhile artists that used to be able to be supported by labels even though their income was modest are no longer financially viable. The entire industry and music art itself suffers, and the diversity and quality of music goes downhill, because people somehow have come to believe that even though it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to put together a professionally produced album, they shouldn't have to pay for it. Gypsy Life 118,907
Poor Taylor. Getting paid only $2m in a single year from Spotify alone? Will she be able to recover? Can she pay her bills at this point

tea spiller 55
"The only reason that the major record labels relented and cut deals with Spotify after years of holding out was that they really didn't have another choice. The recording industry as we know it has been dying for more than a decade because people can steal all the music they want so easily that sales have tanked. Streaming isn't the new mainstream, it's just the wreckage of a sinking ship. A few boards to hold onto so maybe you survive. And if you are Taylor Swift, and have a full-fledged life raft, why stick around?" I am defending taylor on this one. its not about how much money taylor will make by being on Spotify its about maintaining the integrity of music. sure it can be downloaded and Spotify decreases that but what good is it when there is free music just everywhere. what if Picasso painted a 1000x of the same picture, what would 1 of them be worth? nothing. basically what I'm trying to say is i respect taylors decision to maintain the integrity of her music. leaving a big blank space on Spotify. :king:
Mariano 958
Spotify should either pay artists more, or just all artist should boycot it, seriously. There wouldn't be any problem if Spotify was more expensive (but still less expensive than buying an album etc.) but ... Being so cheap and paying almost nothing to artists is not cute. At people being sarcastic The poor girl is making millions because she has worked hard since she was a teen. You are not going to be earning millions by staying on GGD just sayin. . .
