The Advocate names Putin its 'Person of the Year', adds Hitler stache

Here's one accolade that Vladimir Putin is unlikely to boast about.

The Advocate, the LGBT interest magazine, has named Russia's president its 2014 Person of the Year for his "crusade against LGBT Russians." The profile notes that Putin signed a bill in June 2013 criminalizing “distribution of information… aimed at the formation among minors of nontraditional s-xual attitudes." As The Advocate notes, "nontraditional" in this case equals "anything other than heteros-xual."

Putin's views on gay rights became a flashpoint during the Sochi Winter Olympics in February as many countries, individual athletes and some brands condemned his stance against the LGBT community.

The Advocate's Person of the Year designation, like Time's, doesn't translate to an endorsement; rather, the figure is viewed as exerting great influence over events. In past years, Josef Stalin and Adolph Hitler have been named "Man of the Year" by Time; the appellation was later changed to be unis-x.

To make this Hitler parallel clear, The Advocate gave Putin the shadow of a Hitler mustache. Below is the full image of the cover:

Stupid way to get attention instead of focusing on the people who make positive change happen.

Because we should forget the ones who do negatives changes and don't say anything?

Are you seriously implying that there hasn't been anything said about Putin's anti-gay stances for the last 12 months?

Putin is the dominant figure of the year. Keep US from intervening against Assad, hosted Olympics, took over Crimea, messed with Eastern Ukraine, won fans on the European right. Most influential homophobe worldwide.

Read again :rip:

They're pointing out his homophobic laws,  and there's nothing enough said to remind people how stupid he is, while he's named man of the year or most influencial person in other magazines

That Dec/Jan issue looks back to what happened in the last 12 months.

I don't see how that productively contributes to LGBT issues tbh, but that might just be me.

I'm aware, I just think that to choose a man who negatively influenced LGBT issues as the most influential of the year is sending a rather uncomfortable message. Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer inspiring figures as discussion topics.

Reminding people that even if he's elected person of the year, he's still still an homophobic person who isn't a good president ?

it doesn't have to actively work against him, just reminding people that he shouldnt be praised is already something
