CARACAS, Venezuela (AP)  Venezuela is welcoming 119 Palestinian students who will study medicine on grants provided by the Latin American country's socialist government.

The students landed in Caracas on Thursday. They will study at a school of medicine about two hours outside the capital.

The plan has been in the works since the Israeli offensive in Gaza this summer that is believed to have killed more than 2,000 Palestinians.

On Thursday, officials reaffirmed the Venezuelan government's support for a Palestinian state and its condemnation of Zionism.

Over the summer, Venezuela announced plans to take in hundreds of Palestinian children in need of medical care. The government released photographs of the home it had built for them, named after the late President Hugo Chavez, but it never announced their arrival.

CARACAS – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has welcomed 119 young Palestinians who have arrived in the country to study integral community medicine, saying their arrival marked an “historic day.â€

“We receive you into our homeland on this very special and historic day. Palestine is here; the future of Palestine is here, in its youth,†the president said at a welcoming ceremony Thursday in the Venezuelan capital.

“Palestine has not allowed itself to be eliminated. It has refused to die, it has resisted, and Palestine will live,†Maduro added.

The president asked the 119 students, who are from different areas of Palestine and include 16 young women, to consider Venezuela as their home and assured them that the Venezuelan people were very happy to have them as their guests.

“The voice of Venezuela is always, and will always be, at the service of truth and the struggle of the Palestinian people. You will see, sooner or later, that we will celebrate the fall of the Israeli Wall together. Down with the Israeli Wall!†Maduro said.

During the event, the Palestinian ambassador to Venezuela said that her country had no words to thank Venezuela and presented Maduro with a handmade shell olive tree sent by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

More than 100 students, including 36 from the Gaza Strip, will attend the Dr. Salvador Allende Latin American School of Medicine in Caracas under the Yasser Arafat Scholarships program 2014, coordinated by the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Foundation.

Maduro said that plans call for 1,000 youths from the Gaza Strip to become doctors in Venezuela.

At the height of the Israeli offensive in Gaza in July, the president announced his country would create a shelter for Palestinian children and orphans, and even suggested the possibility of Venezuelan families adopting them.

Venezuela is one of the first countries to help Palestine with humanitarian aid.

How fortunate they are. What a wonderful thing, education is! :D

Quite surprised about the blatant anti-zionism in the yahoo article as a western media source.

much respect and impact  :spin:

What is the point of being shady towards Venezuela? Do you think these youth do not have right to education? Are you one of those who shaded Sweden with Ikea comments when they recognized Palestine?

What is the problem with anti-zionism?

It's just a very distinct reporting style, IMO. Not something I'd expect to see on yahoo.com, and the author clearly has a distinct opinion.

"The plan has been in the works since the Israeli offensive in Gaza this summer that is believed to have killed more than 2,000 Palestinians."

That's a very one-sided statement if you ask me.  I would think this should be reported in a more positive light, focusing on their diplomatic relations and the wonderful opportunity they're being granted. Poor reporting if you ask me.
