West Australian: "Taylor Swift's 1989, the closest thing to Thriller in years"

erm....The Fame has sold over 30 million WW.

It has sold like 17 million in the US since 2008.

Gaga has earned tons of more money than Taylor....not that that matters in music quality. I mean Jessica Fugging Simpson is worth over a billion.

But anyway....30 million over a 6 year career is not thaaaaat impressive...and this is like her fifth album. They are strong numbers....but not slaying numbers.

I'd also like a receipt for this 1.2 million number you are making up because I read the other day that her day 2 sales dropped to like 100k and she is still only in the 800s as of today. She is flirting with 1 million but not there yet.

No, it hasn't.

The Fame is nowhere close to 17 million in the US. Where are you getting these figures from, because you are way off!

HDD and Billboard are both predicting the 1.2 number. I don't know where you are reading, but you shouldn't rely on what you are reading there, because it is in no way accurate.

At the end of the day Gaga has sold 55 million albums in just three LPs and 1EP. (Her average is 15.6 million WW per album)

Taylor has only sold 30 million in five LPs. (Taylor's career average per album is 6 million WW)

At this point, Gaga could literally have FIVE more flop albums sell like ARTPOP and her average would still be higher than Taylors right now to put that into perspective for you.

MATH:

55million (current) + 5X3mill(ARTPOP sales)=70million

3.5 albums (current) + 5 more flops= 8.5

So 70mill divided by 8.5= 8.2 million average per album

I agree with this actually but most of you are reading it out of context. Single wise, every single song on 1989 could be a number one single, which is what made Thriller so dominant is how well the singles did off of that album. 2 very different albums by 2 very different artists, but the success of the singles could honestly be very similar.

Your math is wrong. Gaga has sold around 27 million albums worldwide with 4 albums. (before C2C)

The Fame Monster and Born This Way are better, but ARTPOP leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree, But ARTPOP is a great album.

Musically, ARTPOP is 1000 times better than both Thriller and 1989.

No, I'm sorry. Just no, Taylor is talented I'm sure, but nothing can match the magnitude of perfection that was Thriller, or even Bad and Dangerous. Taylor is just in right now, in my opinion. Will this album be as remembered in 30 years, and be re-released in stores alongside the 60th anniversary edition of Thriller? Can't say I believe that.

I'm not saying whether or not I believe anything is better or not than Thriller.

But...why is Thriller the high bar that we compare everything else to?

It's a classic song, but as a song, it's not much? The video, sure. But the song as just a song shouldn't be something we all look up to. Every artist has their Thriller.

You are aware that Thriller is an album, yes? The best-selling album of all time? No, not every artist has their best selling album of all time, sadly.
