FL Governor Rick Scott Refuses To Debate Opponent Because Of A Fan

Florida's second gubernatorial debate got off to a bizarre start Wednesday evening when incumbent Gov. Rick Scott ® initially refused to debate his opponent because he had a fan under his lectern.

 

Democratic candidate Charlie Crist, the former Florida governor hoping to unseat Scott in next month's election, had a small electric fan placed under his lectern. This, Scott's campaign claimed, violated the debate's "no electronics" rule.

 

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a an extremely peculiar situation right now," debate moderator Elliot Rodriguez of CBS Miami told the crowd, as the camera panned to two empty lecterns onstage. Seconds later, Crist walked onstage, but Scott was absent.

 

"We have been told that Governor Scott will not be participating in this debate," Rodriguez explained. "Governor Crist has asked to have a small fan placed underneath his podium. The rules of the debate that I was shown by the Scott campaign say that there should be no fan. Somehow there is a fan there, and for that reason, ladies and gentlemen, I am being told that Governor Scott will not join us for this debate."

 

Scott eventually agreed to come on stage, and the debate proceeded as planned. As Craig Patrick of Fox 13 noted, Scott held up the debate for nearly eight minutes.

As a Floridian / Political Science/ Pre law major/ Follower of the news and politics let me educate you on what ACTUALLY happened.

 

 

1) Both candidates signed LEGAL documents stating they would Not have electronics on stage. Crist Added a statement about a fan which was not legal.

 

 

2) Politian's should be held accountable to the rules and laws. Why do you think we have politicians that run a muck in DC? It may seem small but its an indication of character.

 

 

3) And I just want to address people who are making this a Republican Vs Democratic issue and don't actually know these people.

Immediately after he switched to the democratic party and switched all his platforms. Nobody switches everything they "Believe/ morals" that quickly. to. The two groups said they sent letters dated Oct. 6 to both candidates specifying that they "may not bring electronic devices (including fans), visual aids or notes."

 

Scott’s campaign returned its letter of agreement Oct. 9, but Crist’s campaign waited until Monday, two days before the debate. It included a handwritten notation by Gelber: "With understanding that the debate hosts will address any temperature issues with a fan if necessary."

 

Leadership Florida’s Walker said the Scott campaign did not see Gelber’s version of the agreement before the debate.

 

But on a Tuesday walk-through at the auditorium, Gelber and Scott’s advisers saw an extension cord from a wall to Crist’s podium held down by duct tape. No follow-up talks took place to clarify when a fan could be used or who would approve it, which meant that organizers and Crist’s campaign had different understandings of the ground rules.

 

Walker said that during the Scott campaign’s walk-through, O’Donnell asked about the fan.

 

"He just said, 'We are still good on the fan?’ and I said there will be no fan," Walker recounted.
