Israel Only Place Where Christians in Middle East Are Safe

Geneva, Switzerland – In a speech to the United Nations Human Rights Council today on September 23, Father Gabriel Naddaf, an Israeli Arab Greek Orthodox priest from Nazareth, called attention to the plight of Christian minorities suffering under Muslim extremists in the Arab world.

Speaking immediately after a panel discussion on the “Human Rights Situation in Palestine and Other Occupied Arab Territories,†during a special debate on racism at the Council’s 27th Regular Session, Father Naddaf discussed the violent oppression facing Middle Eastern Christians and their widespread flight from the region in recent years.

“Across the Middle East, in the last ten years, 100,000 Christians have been murdered each year. That means that every five minutes a Christian is killed because of his faith. Those who can escape persecution at the hands of Muslim extremists have fled. Those who remain exist as second if not third class citizens to their Muslim rulers,†Father Naddaf pointed out.

“In the Middle East today, there is one country where Christianity is not only not persecuted, but affectionately granted freedom of expression, freedom of worship and security. It is Israel, the Jewish State.  Israel is the only place where Christians in the Middle East are safe,†stated Father Naddaf.

“It is time the world woke up to the fact that those who want to destroy the Jewish State are signing the death warrant on the last free Christians in the Holy Land.â€

Father Naddaf was born in Nazareth in 1973 and belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem, Israel’s second largest Christian community. He serves as the head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Yafia, near Nazareth and also works as the primary spiritual adviser and religious spokesperson for the Forum for Drafting the Christian Community, a civil society organization that works to support Christian Arab citizens of Israel to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces.

For his efforts to encourage Arab Christian integration into mainstream Israeli society, Father Naddaf has been denounced by Arab members of the Israeli Knesset, and receives regular threats of intimidation to himself and his family. Israel recently recognized the Aramean Christian minority of Israel, who do not identify themselves as Arabs, as an independent nationality, a move strongly supported by Father Naddaf.

Father Naddaf was brought to Geneva under the auspices of The Face of Israel, a private organization that promotes Israel internationally by engaging influential decision-makers and opinion leaders from civil society as well as diverse cultural and religious communities worldwide.

“Leaders of people, seekers of peace, end your witch hunt of the only free country in the region,†the Nazareth priest concluded to the UN Human Rights Council.

That's not a reason to support Israel.. The persecution of Christians in the middle east is a separate issue from the Israel-Palestine issue. Saying the above sounds -to me- like a cheap way of using the horrible situation some Christians may be in to gain sympathy for the state of Israel, and in my opinion comes across as tacky and desperate.

Senior Catholic cleric: 'If Jews want respect, they must respect others'

" The "price tag" vandalism this week of the monastery at Latrun, in which the culprits sprayed the building's facade with the words "Jesus is a monkey" and set the front door alight, prompted a fierce statement of condemnation signed by Catholic church leaders here.

...

"When you say 'Christianity' to the Israelis," he said, "they immediately think of the Holocaust and the [spanish] Inquisition. People don't know that we are here and that we have roots [here]," adding that this attitude is reflected throughout Israeli society.

Christians in Jerusalem want Jews to stop spitting on them

A few weeks ago, a senior Greek Orthodox clergyman in Israel attended a meeting at a government office in Jerusalem's Givat Shaul quarter. When he returned to his car, an elderly man wearing a skullcap came and knocked on the window. When the clergyman let the window down, the passerby spat in his face.

The clergyman prefered not to lodge a complaint with the police and told an acquaintance that he was used to being spat at by Jews. Many Jerusalem clergy have been subjected to abuse of this kind. For the most part, they ignore it but sometimes they cannot.

Ultra-Orthodox spitting attacks on Old City clergymen becoming daily

Clergymen in the Armenian Church in Jerusalem say they are victims of harassment, from senior cardinals to priesthood students; when they do complain, the police don't usually find the perpetrators.

‘Death to Christianity’: Vandals Desecrate Jerusalem Church With Spray-Painted Messages of Hate

JERUSALEM (TheBlaze/AP)  Vandals have spray-painted “Death to Christianity†and “Jesus, son of a *****†on a Greek Orthodox monastery in Jerusalem. Similar messages were plastered on the outside of another church in the area earlier this year.

The overnight attack on the Monastery of the Cross was the latest in a series of vandalisms of Christian holy sites. Extremist Jews sympathetic to Israel’s settlement movement are suspected.

Noam Zioni

I kind of agree. Christians are very accepted in Israel, we have churches everywhere, and there's respect between the religions.

The photos that someone posted above aren't proved to be made by Jews, so please, and lets not take extremists as a whole.

Is Lebanon safe? The US issued a travel warning.

"Travel to Lebanon is considered by the US Department of State to be DANGEROUS due to a spillover of violence from the civil war in Syria.

US Department of State Travel Warning - Lebanon

There have been reports of deadly fighting in the Lebanese city of Tripoli, and a few instances of rocket fire in the Beqaa valley and southern Beirut. Syrian rebels have warned that they will carry out attacks in Lebanon in response to Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict. Travel to the northern and eastern border regions is especially dangerous and should be avoided. Public demonstrations, and family, neighbourhood, or sectarian disputes often escalate quickly and can lead to gunfire or other violence with little or no warning.

The terminally unsafe areas of the country include Tripoli and border areas near Syria and to a lesser degree Israel. South Beirut, Baalbek, Sidon, Beqaa valley have also suffered sporadic clashes and/or security incidents but these are occasional events that don't happen often.

Check your foreign office for advice before traveling to Lebanon. If you must travel to more dangerous parts of Lebanon, see War zone safety."

Lmao @ someone ''kinda agreeing'' but dismissing that the graffiti were made by some Israeli Jews. :smh:

Clergymen of Catholic church, Greek Orthodox church and Armenian church all ask not to be spat at, and they know who's spitting on them, and they say they got used to it and police is not doing anything about the harassment.

If you wanted to say that Muslims living in Israel wrote those graffiti in Hebrew, then you must know that Jesus and his mother are very respected in Islam, and mocking them is form of disbelief. On another hand, in Judaism, Jesus is not very respected, to put it mildly.

Of course not everyone in Israel behaves like that, but there are many Orthodox Jews among settlers who are extremists and who are very disrespectful to any other faith. And what is state of Israel doing to stop that?

I feel like, graffiti and screaming isn't really that comparable to beheading.

Although, I've never been beheaded, or had my house/church marked by graffiti, I'll be honest.
